The right-hand ring grew as a fashion statement that symbolized independence and growing spending power for women in the early 2000s. Today, it still proves a significant style choice – and in St. Louis, Genovese Jewelers has cornered the market on it.
“About 15 years ago, we saw this big shift from women receiving jewelry as a traditional gift given by their husbands for an anniversary or birthday to women buying jewelry for themselves,” president Joe Genovese says. “We had to become fashion-forward. With the majority of women working, especially since that surge 20 years ago, they no longer have to ask permission from their husbands to purchase jewelry. They make the money now to buy it themselves.”
Right-hand rings at Genovese are reasonably priced, too – anywhere from $300 to $3,000. The true value, though, comes with the design. “What came into style back then is still [relevant] today: an ornate, open design, with filigree and width,” Genovese describes. “A right-hand ring can’t be bread-and-butter, no three-stone diamond ring. It has to be unique and with a little bling. Typically, right-hand rings are made of white diamonds. In the past few years, we’ve done a tremendous amount with yellow and rose gold as well.”
Genovese Jewelers, one of the largest jewelers in the country, has a history of innovative design and an incomparable selection. Genovese believes the difference in the company’s service is evident from the moment you first walk in the store. “A core behavior of every salesperson is to greet [customers] quickly and warmly, and offer a beverage, whether it be a beer, wine, Champagne or soft drink,” he says. “We encourage the customer to look around. Once seated, we pull out all the pieces related to what they are looking for, so they can try them on. In those rare occasions when one doesn’t look good on, we’re honest and tell them.”
That kind of transparency throughout the process, from sketch to computer-edited and wax design to finished product, ensures clients get exactly what they want. “We do a rough drawing [based on] what they want, like something a 3-year-old drew, and it always amazes them that we create this beautiful piece of jewelry based off of this terrible picture,” Genovese says. “The process can go anywhere from a week to three weeks. You get something of tremendous value for less money than you can find anywhere else in the states or overseas – and it’s manufactured right here in St. Louis.”
