CGCF Holiday's Heroes 1/20/2019

Founded in 2012 by three-time Major League Baseball All-Star Matt Holliday and his wife, Leslee, Homers for Health, alongside the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, aims to design state-of-the-art health care in family-centered environments at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

Now in its eighth year, thanks to the generosity of thousands of St. Louis Cardinals fans from across the nation and even around the world, Homers for Health has raised more than $5 million. The donations, directly contributed to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, have created and improved new inpatient and outpatient cancer units, a pediatric intensive care unit and an imaging center for the hospital.

Community Impact

Forget about the peanuts and Cracker Jacks. The real joy of going to the ballpark is in rooting for the children who will benefit each time a Card hits a crowd-pleasing home run! This year, Matt Carpenter co-chairs Homers for Health alongside 9-year-old Luke Beck.

Beck, a son of Danny and Ronda, is a patient at Cardinal Glennon. The sixth of seven children, he was diagnosed at age 7 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, known commonly as ALL, after bruising of an unknown etiology began appearing on his arms and legs.

After enduring a tough start to his three-year treatment with induction chemotherapy, Beck moved into the newly remodeled Leslee and Matt Holliday wing of the hospital, which offered private bathrooms, bigger patient rooms and a colorful, inspiring interior. The new digs lifted the family’s spirits. “It really made my home away from home a good place to visit and get better,” Beck says.

Watching baseball is a favorite pastime for the young sport and his three brothers. When at home, Beck is out in the backyard, playing catcher, and he can always be found in a Cardinals or Saint Louis Billikens tee. He, alongside his family, are grateful for the opportunity to raise funds for his fellow patients at Cardinal Glennon through Homers for Health. The current count is 35 home runs for the Cardinals, so make your pledge today and make homers matter more this season!
