The Next Step hosted its annual scholarship celebration as a hybrid virtual and in-person event at the Sheraton Westport Chalet. In-person guests enjoyed a social hour, dinner and program that included students sharing their stories of recovery and education. The event was live streamed for guests at home and raised more than $272,000 to fund scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year.
The Next Step is a St. Louis-based nonprofit with a mission “ to provide tuition assistance to individuals active in a 12-step recovery program from alcohol or substance abuse who demonstrate financial need and are pursuing an academic or vocational education,” according to its website. Since 2005, The Next Step has awarded over $1.5 million in scholarships to 695 students pursuing their dreams of education. Just in 2021, The Next Step provided over $171,000 in scholarships to 71 people in recovery.
“The Next Step believes education is one of the best ways to rise above addiction,” board president Darcy Glidewell says. “Tonight was a celebration of our scholarship recipients as they continue to work hard to achieve their educational goals while also providing better lives for themselves, their families and the entire St. Louis community.”
