Crossroads: An Occasion for Friendship

June 15 – July 1, 2018

at Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design

Featuring the work of longtime friends Daniel Barnett, Masaya Imanishi, and Richard Wehrs

Opening Reception: Friday, June 22 from 6 - 8PM

ST. LOUIS (June 15, 2018) Twenty-seven years ago, Professors Dan Anderson and Paul Dresang welcomed Masaya Imanishi of Nara City, Japan (a Japanese Ministry of Culture awardee) to SIU-Edwardsville. Richard Wehrs, then a first-year grad student from Minnesota and Dan Barnett, a BFA student at the time, very quickly befriended Imanishi. Their shared experiences at SIUE led to a deep friendship that continues to this day.

Masaya Imanishi’s fine porcelain and stoneware pieces reflect his lifelong strive to update Japan’s centuries-old Sometsuke (blue-on-white) tradition.

Dan Barnett’s pieces reflect an ingenuity and creativity built on decades of experimentation with all kinds of technical craft, from forging metals to designing furniture, electronic devices and even kilns – all extensions of Dan’s remarkable curiosity and deftness in many fields.

Richard Wehrs’ work playfully explores the tensions within - between compassion, generosity and kindness; and greed, selfishness, and evil – topics that reflect his 30+ years of work as an ordained minister.

These three artists differ in their approaches to subject matter, raw materials, and technique. However, beneath the work is a clear common ground: dedication to clay, to exploration, and to friendship.

Available for Interviews: Stefanie Kirkland and the artists.
