The Bonsack Gallery at John Burroughs School hosts an opening reception for Katie Donovan's solo exhibit, Text and Image (and Snails) at 5:30-7:30pm on Friday, December 3. The show is on view until January 25, 2022.

About the Exhibit:

Text and Image (and Snails) reflects Donovan’s interests in what we decide to be true and how certain forms of presentation, such as the pairing of text and image, can provide nuanced meaning. This body of work nods at the format, history and tropes of illuminated manuscripts. These richly symbolic text and image pairings were highly regarded in the Middle Ages for their craft and religious authority, and often the illustrators hired to create illuminated manuscripts altered the meaning of the text by playing with the images in the margins. Donovan takes that tradition and uses it as a frame for personal musings, a reflection on her associative grapheme-color synesthesia, and observations of the general public’s interest and trust in messaging, if delivered by a snail.
