Jane Mackey thought the biggest surprise of the evening of Nov. 12, 2010, was the sparkling engagement ring that was placed on her finger by her then-boyfriend, Zach Foster. But while the couple celebrated at Hotel Drisco in San Francisco, she was floored over and over again as one by one, members their family walked in to join the festivities. “It was beyond anything I could have imagined,” Jane says. “It’s all about family and friends for us, and it was really special to have everyone be a part of that moment.”
In 2005, while waiting for a haircut, Ellen Ross flipped through Traditional Home magazine and saw an ad for a New Orleans-based company offering custom and ready-made window treatments. “I remember thinking, They can’t possibly be as beautiful as they look in these pictures, and I forgot about it,” Ross says. “And then, six weeks later—same salon, different magazine—I see the ad again. This time I made note of the website.” When Ross visited the site, she learned that the company wanted to open a franchise in St. Louis. As it happened, Ross herself had been looking for a new venture. “After I inquired, they contacted me immediately, and I flew to New Orleans. It was crazy!” she says. “That was in March, and The Curtain Exchange opened in October.”

Their story…Julie and Joshua met at a Lincoln Park neighborhood bar in Chicago after a Jewish Federation social event. Although Julie is not exactly sure when she knew Josh was ‘the one,’ she did know pretty early on that she was in love. For him, it was a ‘three-part epiphany:’ Julie liked the hiccups, Taco Bell and was supportive of the things that are important to him.
Alexis Lauren Casady and David Harrison Cohen were married Aug. 7 with a ceremony and reception at the Four Seasons Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., at Troon North. Following a honeymoon to Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, a second reception was held at the Caenen Castle in Shawnee Mission, Kan.
I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but romantic comedies are incredibly formulaic. Boy meets girl. Something keeps boy and girl apart. In the end boy gets girl. And that’s how we want it. If Richard Gere went back to his miserable life without Julia Roberts, we would be furious. If Hugh Grant didn’t figure out he was pushing people away out of fear and realize that woman (Julianne Moore, Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, Rachel Weisz take your pick, his movies are all alike) is the best thing that ever happened to him, we’d ask for our money back. That’s why we’re there, to see the boy get the girl. That being said, The Proposal has several very interesting and inventive takes on the standard rom-com. For one thing, boy hates girl.
Remember when theater in St. Louis took a sleepy hiatus before The Rep kicked off its new season in September? Apart from The Muny, culture from May through August was derived mainly from a good book or a trip to the museum.
• The Stables, a microbre wery, distillery and pizzeria set to open in mid-May, will be housed in the stables of the old Lemp brewery at 1821 Cherokee St. Partners JESSE JONES and PAUL POINTER have outfitted the 150-seat interior with an 18-foot long tavern bar, gigantic crystal chandelier and a 10-foot tall fireplace reclaimed from the Joplin Mo., train station. In the kitchen will be chef AARON WHALEN making Neapolitan pizzas. (If you loved the pizzettas he made at Bastante, order the grilled specialty pizzas.) Jones will be brewing only lagers: “My goal is to produce award-winning beers, but there will be a tap handle for other local suds makers.” Corn liquor, aka white-collar moonshine, as well as vodka, rum and gin will be made in the distillery.
