A couple months ago, my editor approached me about one of those new painting-while-drinking-wine classes that have recently dominated everyone’s social media newsfeeds. My mission was to visit the new Pinot’s Palette in Webster Groves. The thought of doing something artistic while drinking wine, and then writing about it sounded like something just this side of nirvana, so, of course, I signed on.

It’s not a birthday without cake, so to commemorate St. Louis’ 250th birthday, one cake just wouldn’t do. Public art exhibit Cakeway to the West invited local artists and organizations to design and decorate 250 4-foot tall fiberglass birthday cakes that will be displayed around the city throughout the year.
Mary Ruth Wagner has quite the resume: The Ursuline Academy grad served as student ambassador, a youth retreat leader and a varsity athlete, in addition to being a frequent volunteer. Her community work includes volunteering with Saint Louis Crisis Nursery for her junior service project at Ursuline—a school which features the motto, Serviam, as she notes—in addition to work with the Pujols Family Foundation.
Ursuline Academy senior Adriana Esparza was named a 2013-14 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. The honor recognizes Esparza’s high PSAT score and grade point average. This College Board program recognizes only the top 2 percent of Hispanic students who take the PSAT.
Polsinelli senior partner DOREEN DODSON has been appointed to the American Bar Association’s Commission on Immigration. The commission directs the association’s efforts to ensure fair treatment and full due process rights for immigrants and refugees in the United States.

Clayton Mayor Harold Sanger cut the ribbon at the debut of Clayton Early Childhood Center’s new classroom and indoor play space. Board president Cason Coplin, board secretary Natalie Cox and executive director Gina Siebe also joined the ceremony. St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness recently hosted a fund & awareness raising event, Painting with a Purpose’ at the Creve Coeur location of Painting with a Twist. The event welcomed a capacity crowd for wine and hors d’oeuvres while they created a still-life painting of Four Vases.
Keller Williams Realty St. Louis in Kirkwood recently celebrated its annual RED Day (Renew, Energize and Donate) with plenty of flowers and sunshine. RED Day was created for agents and their families as a nationwide Keller Williams commitment to give back to the communities they serve. CITY ACADEMY received a $1 million gift from the Crawford Taylor Foundation for endowment. The gift supports the school’s efforts to offer an expanded Early Childhood Program. With the help of this grant, plans to expand to a total of 175 students by 2014 are in place. Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate recently celebrated the opening of its new chocolate factory by hosting a party for friends, family and residents of The Hill, where the facility is located. A portion of the retail proceeds and all proceeds from a chocolate basket raffle went to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Saint Louis Crisis Nursery hosted the 7th annual 'Over the Top for Tots' ladies luncheon in St. Charles. The event benefited the Nursery's Healing Hearts Program, which provides art and play therapy for children who need help mending their broken spirits. Some 500 attendees enjoyed shopping, a live auction and a cake decorating contest; and honored the contributions of Pat Kulik, and Kara and Mike Gatto to the Nursery.
