Congratulations are in order for chef DAVE ROOK, who has been named new executive chef at Oceano Bistro’s Chesterfield location at 16125 Chesterfield Parkway West. Most recently, he and his brother, MIKE, owned and operated Washington Avenue’s King Louie’s Empire Deli and Pizza. He's also served as executive chef at Copia and Crazy Fish, as well as being part-owner and chef of Aqua Vin. Rook is part of the well-known culinary Rook family, which includes dad LOU JR., meat cutter at Annie Gunn's, and brother LOU III, who serves as exec chef there.
In 2014, Epworth Children and Family Services celebrates 150 years of helping kids find their strengths and of serving the community with its lineup of programs to help children build a brighter future. To commemorate the milestone and honor longtime supporters Noemi and Michael Neidorff, Epworth will host its Pillar of Strength Award event Feb. 15. “Considering we’re celebrating 250 years since St. Louis’ founding, 150 years as a nonprofit is pretty extraordinary,” notes Donna Wilkinson, the event’s honorary chair. “Epworth certainly has stood the test of time and has been really great for the community.”

As the No. 1 killer of women, heart disease has personally touched the lives of many people. As chair of the upcoming 2014 Go Red for Women luncheon, Penny Pennington, a principal at Edward Jones, realized how much it had affected her own family: Her grandmother died at age 55 of a heart attack, along with other family members who have been affected. “As I learned more about heart disease in women, I found out that it is likely that I will have a personal experience with heart disease either myself or through someone close to me. The statistics are much higher for women and heart disease than any other killer, including cancer: About three times more women have heart disease.”

This just in…USA Today has declared the Four Seasons St. Louis as one of the top hotel breakfasts in America. In its latest Daily Meal ranking, the newspaper lists the Four Seasons’ Cielo restaurant at No. 6, citing its Belgian waffle with cappuccino mascarpone cream and pralines and the crème brûlée French toast with blueberry compote, as well as the egg-white frittata and the chocolate bomboloni (Italian filled donut). Congratulations to hotel general manager Alper Oztok and his team!
