St. Louis was almost all prairie at the time of French settlement. Ladue, for example, had mixed vegetation, with open grasslands and patches of woods. Start this fall to prepare your grounds for easy spring pocket prairie planting.
While approaches to reducing wrinkles on the hands and décolleté are limited, facial wrinkles can be erased by using a wide range of surgical and nonsurgical techniques. The choice of procedure depends on the nature of the wrinkle.
An old adage says, If you really want to know a woman’s age, don’t look at her face—look at her hands.
We put our hair through a lot trying to get the latest look—but sometimes, all of that effort turns against us as we damage our locks with blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners and the elements. To help return your hair to its natural beauty, we spoke with industry veteran Jerry Dial, who recently opened up shop at Cheveux in Brentwood.
Summer is the time when we dare to bare. But when it comes to your skin, make sure you have sun protection covered, from the top of your head down to the tips of your toes.
Sun safety is important for everyone, especially during the summer months of intense sunlight and frequent sun exposure, but children’s skin is more sensitive than adults’, making careful protection of kids’ skin particularly necessary.

In the world of professional gardening, winter brings on different tasks. Hopefully, most of these jobs will be indoors when the weather is at its worst, as snow-shoveling and ice-chipping rank near the very bottom of our favorite jobs list. About the only things lower on that list are cleaning up the bird messes under the seed feeders, mucking out the pond on a cold spring day or spreading ripe manure in the heat of the summer. OSEA founder and ‘chief seaweed officer’ Jenefer Palmer comes from a long line of healers. In fact, her grandmother was one of the first female chiropractors in the world, who always told her granddaughter, Always read the label. She took the advice to heart when working as spa director at Murrieta Hot Springs, which at the time was a premier holistic destination spa. But what she found came as a surprise: Many of the most expensive products used inexpensive and sometimes dangerous synthetic ingredients. Palmer now uses 100 percent natural marine-based organic ingredients in her products, which are carried at luxury spas around the world. We caught up with her on a recent visit to Soft Surroundings, St. Louis’ exclusive provider of OSEA products.

This summer’s brutal heat and drought have been hard on the landscape, with dead trees and damaged lawns everywhere. We returned from traveling in late June to find our garden slowly turning to toast. The hostas were brown, crispy potato chips, and the swamp-loving box elder was the first tree to die. Japanese maples and yew hedges became blondes under the searing summer sun. Some trees would look fine on Monday and be completely brown before the weekend. In most cases, the oak, pine, maple and ash trees already had some hidden damage that weakened them and reduced their resilience. Dogwoods, red buds and sassafras all started dropping their leaves. One day in July, the thick carpet of fallen leaves under my sycamore made me think it was October.

More than half of a person’s lifetime ultraviolet (UV) exposure typically occurs during childhood and adolescence.
