Eighty years ago, in southern Missouri, world-class artists like Thomas Hart Benton, Joe Jones and Oscar Thalinger set up their easels and began to paint. They taught at the Summer School of Art, an offshoot of the Ste. Genevieve Art Colony, which was formed by two women serving on the St. Louis Artists’ Guild board of governors. The women, who normally summered on the coast to paint, started the colony when the Great Depression hindered their ability to travel.

And that’s what it’s all about at Naked Bacon, a local company that recently has been re-thought of by founder/CEO John Kreilich. “I started the business three years ago as Kreilich Farm, but we rebranded in June in time to launch at Zoofari (at the Saint Louis Zoo),” Kreilich notes. “The recipes that we use go back to my great-grandfather August, who in 1861 lived on a large amount of land in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., and would smoke all their own meats.”
As fall harvest approaches, many people head out to experience classic Missouri Wine Country: rolling hills, vivid sunsets, winding rivers, fertile lands and warm people.

Chef Gerard Craft is a constant fixture in the local—and now, national—food scene with his frequent culinary accolades; and maybe most notably with the recent opening of his latest eatery, Pastaria, in Clayton, and the relocation of his flagship restaurant Niche right next door, which we visited recently. To say it was an over-the-top culinary experience would be a gross understatement.
Spring has sprung, and that means that area wineries are--or soon will be--pouring their latest bounty for everyone to enjoy. We touched base with five of the most popular wineries around to see what they have in store for fans of the grape this season.
On any given day at The Gatesworth, you can stop by the Fitness Center and find residents partaking in exercise classes, using equipment or swimming laps in the pool. In the Starbird Theater, a group may be discussing current events, enjoying classical music or listening to a professor from one of the local universities. In another area of the senior living community, a social worker may be meeting with residents as part of a support group; while in the dining room, a book club gathers over lunch. Anywhere you turn, The Gatesworth offers opportunities to support a resident’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. “Our goal is to provide programs and amenities that help them live a more active, happy life,” says executive director Martha Kessel. “Seniors are living longer, and it’s so important to stay healthy and learn new things every day.”

Trieste Lynn Signorino and Patrick Adams Bowe met in high school; and even then, Trieste knew she had found the one she would spend her life with. “I realized he would support me in following my dreams, even if it meant being apart while we both went to college,” she explained. Patrick popped the question over a simple dinner at Trieste’s apartment, not realizing it was April Fool’s Day when he proposed. Luckily for both, it was not a prank.

Laura McCarthy and Seth Jarman first met at a mutual friend’s Valentine’s Day party, and Laura knew early on that the relationship would be a serious one. “There wasn’t one moment I can point to, but over time, Seth started to feel like family to me,” she says, adding that they were so sure that they were meant to be, they bought a house together. “The ring was more of a formality,” Laura says.
With temperatures soaring to all-time highs this summer, keeping cool is imperative, and nothing helps keep the heat at bay like a glass of fine Missouri wine.
When German immigrants arrived in Missouri in 1837 and settled on the banks of the Missouri River in a small village they named Hermann, they had no idea they were planting the seeds for an enduring wine tradition.
