If you’ve been daydreaming about a kitchen makeover with sparkling new appliances, craftsman cabinets and luxurious lighting, A Gathering Place Kitchen Tour is for you. “It’s a really fun, self-guided tour from house to house, where you can bring a group of friends, see different styles and let your imagination run away with itself on what you can do in your own kitchen,” says Junior League of St. Louis president Maureen Strasheim.
LN’s own design editor ALAN E. BRAINERD and his business partner, MARIA CLIFFORD, were among a privileged few who recently attended the highly anticipated auction of socialite LILLY PULITZER’s estate in West Palm Beach. Brainerd and Clifford, co-owners of Great Estates, were able to secure seats in the second row of the packed auction house for the sale of items from the fashion icon’s Palm Beach compound. Among Brainerd’s acquisitions for the day: three LILIAN MACKENDRICK watercolors and a charming, lidded cabbage box to add to his majolica collection. For her part, Clifford secured Chinese Chippendale cocktail and side tables for her living room.
We’ve all been to a wedding where we are met by an usher who hands us a program for the ceremony. These programs provide a guide to the marriage ceremony; and some guests wish to keep these as a keepsake of the wedding. The program is especially useful if there are guests who are not of your faith. It will allow them to understand the sacred elements of your particular wedding service.

Back for its third year, Junior League of St. Louis’ annual Kitchen Tour is going to be bigger and better than ever, if event co-chair Ann Beck has anything to say about it. Along with Julie Kearbey and their committee, she is working to build on the successes of years past. “It’s one of the League’s largest fundraisers, and it has a lot of public support,” she says.
Following an engagement at Busch Stadium, a local couple welcomed guests to their wedding weekend with a Cardinals’ galvanized pail of game-day treats at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark Hotel.
There are as many ways to make your party décor say ‘spring’ as there are reasons to celebrate. From festive colors to simple elegance, area venues gave us their best shot—and we’re taking notes!
No matter the reason for celebrating, springtime offers a variety of festive, on-trend entertaining options—all of which are completed by their scrumptious menus. We asked area professionals to discuss what dining ideas will make a party stand out this season.
No party is complete without décor, and what better option this spring than the very blooms that represent the season? We talked to three local floral designers to find out which stems scream spring and picked up some ideas to make sure everything at your gathering comes up roses—or perhaps tulips, in this case.

How many times has this happened to you? You're in a restaurant and can't decide what to order. You glance at a nearby table as food is being served and say, “That looks great, I’ll have what that gentleman’s having.”
Growing up in the ’60s, Linda Pilcher had the good fortune of having a mother who was a really great cook. And beyond that, she actually made healthy, fresh things, like her own yogurt and granola. “That’s the tradition I grew up with,” recalls Pilcher, owner of Something Elegant Catering. “But in the sense of what is happening today, it was not quite the same because people really didn’t think so much about locally grown and produced foods. It wasn’t in our vocabulary.”

We put together pink treat bags that also provided information on buying pictures from the party photographer; embellished tables with painted vases, pink carnations and jewels; and spray painted picture frames for guests to use as a prop in photos.
