To help celebrate the Missouri History Museum's American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition exhibit, the folks at Bixby's are offering a series of happy hours this summer inspired by the exhibition. On Tuesday, July 22, and Tuesday, August 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., guests at the restaurant (located on the second floor of the museum) can enjoy locally inspired hors d'oeuvres and desserts, paired with a Pinckney Bend or Anheuser-Busch tasting. Part of the joy of gardening is the daily surprise. Sometimes, conditions conspire to make a garden look tired and worn, such as extreme summer heat compounded by drought. Those days, while disappointing, must be endured. However, on other occasions, gardeners may draw a lucky had when strange combinations of conditions bring about splendid moments. This year, for example, the long, cold soil temperatures slowed down the early varieties of spring bulbs; then good moisture and warm sun brought out the late-season kinds right on schedule. It's time once again for the James Beard Foundation Awards. The annual ‘Oscars’ of the culinary world recently announced its list of semi-finalists, and St. Louis is represented in a big way. Chefs GERARD CRAFT (Niche); KEVIN WILLMANN (Farmhaus); KEVIN NASHAN (Sidney Street Cafe); JOSH GALLIANO (The Libertine); and BEN POREMBA (Elaia) all are in the running for the title of Best Chef: Midwest. Chef RICK LEWIS of Quincy Street Bistro has been tapped as a contender for Rising Star Chef of the Year, and Taste in the CWE has been nominated for Outstanding Bar Program. Finalists for the awards will be announced on March 18, in Chicago, and the winners will be revealed in NYC in May. Congrats to all, good luck and thanks for representing St. Louis' culinary scene so well!
The sixth annual Festivale to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be held on Saturday, March 8, at Neo on Locust, 2801 Locust St. VIP admission will be from 7 to 8 p.m. with general admission beginning at 8 p.m. The event concludes at 10:30 p.m. This year's event has a speakeasy theme and features beers from some of the area's best breweries, as well as apps, entertainment, raffles and a silent auction. Through the Veiled Prophet Organization’s Maids of Honor Project, participating young women and their fathers have supported the community with painting houses, cooking meals and planting flowers. In recent years, the program has averaged 400 volunteers and about 2,300 hours of community service, including rehabbing 75 homes in North County, cooking and packing 65,000 meals for Food Outreach, and landscaping the grounds of Rainbow Village and City Hall for Brightside St. Louis. LN spoke with three exceptional young women, who walked at this year’s ball, about how they gave back.

Congratulations to the folks at Sidney Street Cafe, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this month. To commemorate the milestone, chef KEVIN NASHAN and his kitchen staff will be partnering with 10 chefs from St. Louis and beyond for a one-of-a-kind dining experience early next year. The roster of chefs is a veritable culinary who's who, and includes GERARD CRAFT of Niche Restaurant Group, KEVIN WILLMANN of Farmhaus and JOSH GALLIANO of The Libertine. The event will be held at Sidney Street Cafe on Jan. 20, with passed apps and cocktails being served beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dinner kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $195 per person. St. Louis truly is a unique educational marketplace. There are more private schools in St. Louis than most any other city in the United States. Because many of these institutions have small classes and a unique educational niche, students who learn differently thrive in our city. In fact, many of these children and teenagers enroll in honors-level curriculums, take advanced placement classes, or attend the city’s best preparatory schools.
Congrats to CHUCK FRIEDHOFF, the newly appointed chef de cuisine at Butler’s Pantry. Friedhoff has served in a variety of kitchens around town, including handling the executive chef and food-and-beverage manager duties at Persimmon Woods Golf Club, and serving as executive chef at J. Buck’s in Clayton.
The folks who own the local Potbelly Sandwich Shop franchise have announced they'll be opening a second location at 12 S. Bemiston Ave. in Clayton in late October. The space previously housed the long-running The Fatted Calf, which closed earlier this year.

After years of eating only hybrid tomatoes, my first taste of an heirloom tomato eight years ago forever convinced me that hybrids no longer had a place on my plate. I was enlightened, to say the least. And so now with pork, according to Taste Network’s Brady Lowe, the founder of the Cochon 555 event (in St. Louis Aug. 25), it’s time to realize there is more to the pig, as well.

More than a traditional veterinarian, Horwitz works to understand why companion animals do what they do—and for her work is being lauded by colleagues across the country.
When a young family returned to the States after spending several years in Shanghai, China, they brought back authentic Asian pieces to incorporate into the design of their modern Des Peres home. Michael Wyrock, a senior design consultant for I. O. Metro, helped bring the home's Asian-inspired living room to life.
In 2009, Gateway Children’s Charity was founded by a group of eight people who wanted to make a tangible difference in the lives of local kids. “In our opinion, there was a void or gap that existed in funding projects that were on the smaller side, which maybe didn’t qualify for or were overlooked by bigger charity groups. We wanted to help fill that void,” says Michael Todorovich II, the nonprofit’s president and one of the founding board members.
St. Louis restaurants were well represented on the Opinionated About Dining's Top 25 Midwest Restaurants list that was recently released. Niche took the No. 2 slot; Sidney Street Cafe was No. 8; Stone Soup Cottage was No. 11; Brasserie by Niche came in at No. 12; Farmhaus garnered No. 13; and Tony's landed at No. 20; and Harvest rounded out the list at 22. St. Louis' food culture will be recognized on the national stage this summer, thanks to Cochon 555, a premier culinary event that will bring together some of the area's very best chefs to see just what they can create with the pig.
Working in family services at Bellerive Gardens, Jodi Wimmer is used to helping families through a time of grief. “We want to provide good service and help them find a nice resting place for their loved one in a time of need,” she says. But Wimmer urges families to think about burial plans before there is an immediate need, such as during estate planning. “We’ve had families tell us, I’m so glad my mom and dad picked out their marker. Everything is so nice for the family when they’ve done that—they can grieve without worrying, Did I do the right thing for Mom? Would she have liked that?”
