Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant will open its first-ever St. Louis location next month in Town & Country. The restaurant, in Town and Country Crossing, will feature award-winning wines in a Napa-style tasting-room setting, as well as contemporary American fare. Opening is set for Dec. 12.

Great Harvest Bread Company, which recently moved from Olivette, and La Cosecha Coffee Roasters have teamed up to provide customers with top-notch coffee and bread at 7360 Manchester Road in Maplewood. "We're sort of roommates" jokes La Cosecha co-owner JAMIE JESCHKE, since the two businesses are sharing the space and each one is operating as a separate entity. The idea, according to Jeschke, is for each company to do what it does best and complement the other. In addition to its coffee bar operation, La Cosecha also is roasting its coffee onsite.

BUTLER’S PANTRY treated 14-year-old Alexis to a baker’s dream day through the Make-A-Wish program. Alexis, who has been battling neuromyelitis optica, was greeted by a cheering crowd as she arrived by limousine. Not only was the teen able to spend the day in a professional kitchen, she was the star of a lunch for herself and her guests. Additional surprises to complete Alexis’ celebration included a designer cake, floral arrangements, an embroidered chef’s coat and professional kitchen supplies. City fave Blueberry Hill has announced four new specialty sandwiches, a Western Wagyu Burger, and a Blueberry White Chocolate Cheesecake to its menu; and also has re-introduced its popular Gazpacho. Modesto Tapas Bar & Restaurant has debuted some new items for spring, as well. The menu now has four new small bites, including the Fritada (a fried shrimp and scallop skewer) and the Banderilla (an anchovy, artichoke and olive skewer), as well as the return of the Judias Verdes, sauteed green beans with onions and sherry.

Brian Pelletier claims he has “the best job in the world,” and few would dispute that. He is the owner, founder and chief chocolatier of Kakao Chocolate. To quote Ira Gershwin, it’s nice work if you can get it—and Pelletier has got it! But working with chocolate wasn’t always his profession. “I was in marketing, communications and public relations—I was a senior VP at Fleishman-Hilllard,” Pelletier recalls. “And as I was approaching the 20-year mark, I was feeling the need to do something dramatically different. I knew that I wanted my own business, and that I wanted to physically make something with my hands. I also wanted to do something with food because I loved to cook, so I opened myself up to the universe to see what would happen.”
Janet Droege has come full-circle. She lives on the same property where she grew up—only in a new house built a year ago to replace her childhood home. Janet and her husband, Dr. Bill Droege, owner and president of Esquire Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, each grew up in Richmond Heights and believe it is a great place to raise their own family. Their daughters, Molly, 16, and Madeline, 14, attend Clayton H.S. and Immacolata Catholic School. Janet’s mother also lives in her own quarters on the property. And the Droeges’ two Shih Tzus, CiCi and Chloe, complete the family. Janet told us more about what she and her family love about life in Richmond Heights.
Congratulations go out to Cafe Madeline, which celebrates 10 years in business this month. The cafe, located at the Piper Palm House in Tower Grove Park, is commemorating the anniversary with a brunch special available through January, where guests can buy one brunch at the regular menu price and get the second for just $10.

St. Vincent Home for Children is sponsoring a benefit wine tasting on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 36 facility at 2319 Choteau Ave.There will be a wide variety of wines available, courtesy of Show Me Vino, in conjunction with Missouri Beverage Company. Also on tap: live music from Jazz St. Louis All Stars, hors d'oeuvres from Russo's Catering and a silent auction. Yours truly was honored to be a judge at a chili cook-off, part of the annual Fall Festival at Reed Elementary School in Ladue, on Oct. 14. This was the first year for the cook-off, which took the place of the long-running pie-baking contest, and 14 chili masters stepped up to compete. Custom-carved pumpkins from CJ Sanders were given out as prizes for categories such as Best Pork Chili, Best Beef Chili and Best Vegetarian Chili. At the end of the day, JALAIN FELLMAN took the overall top honors with her creation, dubbed Blazing Saddles.
Trick or treat…Youngsters at SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN-ST. LOUIS celebrated Halloween early with a party just for them. Patients selected costumes, played games and worked on Halloween-themed crafts, courtesy of Spirit of Children, an organization that works to make hospital stays less scary for kids and their families. To date, the organization has raised more than $75,000 for Shriners and more than $10 million nationwide since the program’s inception.
