It’s a milestone year for SING FOR SITEMAN, the annual event that brings together a group of world-renowned artists from OPERA THEATRE OF SAINT LOUIS to perform for one night only to benefit SITEMAN CANCER CENTER’s Discovery Fund for cancer research. The fifth annual benefit concert on Monday, June 9, will be held at a new venue this year: the 730-seat Performing Arts Center at John Burroughs School. Opera stars STEPHANIE BLYTHE, RENÉ BARBARA, SUSANNAH BILLER, PATRICK CARFIZZI, LEVI HERNANDEZ, SEAN PANIKKAR and ELIZABETH ZHAROFF will be accompanied by internationally acclaimed pianist CAROL WONG, who also serves as the concert’s artistic director. MEET LN’S NEW LIL’ ONE: Sadie Smith! Although she was a little under the weather during her recent visit to Citygarden, the 2-year-old didn’t let a cold stop her from eagerly climbing on and exploring the sculptures scattered throughout the downtown space. “She has so much energy, she doesn’t walk anywhere, she dances,” says Sadie’s mom, Christina.
St. Louis is now home to the WORLD’S LARGEST CHESS PIECE, as certified by the folks at Guinness World Record. The 14-foot, 16-inch tall piece—a king—is 6-feet wide at the base. It was unveiled earlier this week to kick off the U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis in the Central West End. Tournament play began May 8 and will run through May 20.
