It's time to tee it up and begin our monthly golf meetings again. After such a harsh winter, it's time for us to get back on the fairways. Let's get to it.
It’s the final golf column of the season, so let’s hit a driver and get started.
Having lived and worked in St. Albans for 22-years, Melinda McCarthy has seen the area grow from a rural retreat to a much more active community. “My kids are grown now, and my oldest son lives in Chicago and hasn’t been back here for years,” she says. “He came home not long ago and said, I can’t believe all the stuff they have now, why didn’t they have all of this when we were growing up? If you’ve been here before and you think you’ve seen St. Albans, you haven’t: You need to come back. Everything has changed—but the beauty remains constant.”
St. Louis native Scott Langley enjoyed a solid debut on the PGA Tour. Langley, a Parkway South and University of Illinois graduate, earned a spot on the tour this year.

He is at a golf course every morning at 6 a.m. He wants to be the first person off, and he doesn’t have time to wait behind a foursome of a bunch of hackers. He has too much at stake. He has a swing out of Golf Digest and the mind of a champion. He also has a dream: 23-year-old Justin Bryant wants to be a member of the PGA Tour.
It’s been a busy month with the state high school golf tournaments plus other amateur events in the area. Let’s tee it up and see what’s been happening.
If you want to help a former St. Louisian play a round of golf at Pebble Beach with Wayne Gretzky, Drew Brees and Mark Wahlberg, go online to vote! Parkway North grad Scott Fahrney has been selected a finalist in the U.S. Open Challenge by Golf Digest and NBC based on his 60-word essay. Fahrney wrote that his fondest golf memories are about his dad, Sean O’Hair, from whom he has been estranged for the past couple years. “I thought if I won this contest, I could walk the fairways of Pebble Beach with my dad at my side and begin the healing process,“ he wrote. Visit the Golf Digest web site to vote.
With the economy still in the bunker and gas prices beginning to rise like my score, you might have to forget about that golf trip to Hilton Head or Pebble Beach. But you can find terrific golf destinations right here in Missouri: Branson and Lake of the Ozarks.
