With the arrival of fall, so come all the cravings of the season: squash of all varieties—including and especially pumpkin—apples, caramel (or apples dipped in caramel), and bacon and chocolate. (OK, those last two can apply to any season.)
Laumeier Sculpture Park is one of St. Louis’ most spectacular gems. The Loli family of St. Louis picked a perfect fall day to explore and enjoy the sights, all while showing off some very stylish and playful looks.
Having a child with a learning disability of any kind is a struggle. Between diagnosis, doctors appointments and treatments, school work can get lost in the shuffle. Fortunately, several area schools cater specifically to students with learning disabilities, which means youngsters can focus on their education and stay on track to success.
So I've been doing some substitute-teaching of late—just a class here and there. I get to brush up on some subjects in which I used to be proficient, back when the wheels were well-oiled. It's a win-win, really—for me. The students (I think) enjoy their time with their new sub. I haven't been pelted with spit wads or been fooled into spending the entire class discussing The League on FX (OK, once, it happened once). So far, I'm teaching, they're learning. All is as it should be. And that's when the teacher I am helping out informs me of one tiny detail: On Tuesday, you'll be taking my beginning Greek class.
Some people are blessed to work in a field they love for their entire lives, while others find that their calling changes as they advance in their professional life. And still there are those who find fulfillment in their hobbies, which can take center stage once the responsibilities of work have given way to retirement. We spoke with two women who found their calling only after many successful years in another profession.
Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) leaves his rural Missouri cul de sac one sunny July day and heads to visit his twin sister, Margo (Carrie Coon), at a neighborhood bar they co-own. There, Nick receives a call from a neighbor letting him know—we assume—that his front door is open and his cat has gotten out. When Nick returns to retrieve the animal, something is not right.
A sluggish economy has hurt nonprofits since the recession—with cutbacks in government funding, a decrease in giving from both small and large donors, and increased demand, especially for nonprofits in the social services.
No matter the size of a donation, when someone gives money to charity, they have some level of confidence that it will be used for a specific purpose. And that expectation only grows with the size of the gift, particularly if there’s a donor agreement in place. The book, Abusing Donor Intent: The Robertson Family’s Epic Lawsuit Against Princeton University, was written by Doug White, director for the Master of Science in Fundraising Management program at Columbia University. In it, he digs into a high-profile case where the donors accused the university of misusing their charitable gift. We asked the author about the case, its implications, and steps donors should take before giving their hard-earned funds—no matter how noble the cause.
The head of the class...For the second year in a row, Ladue Horton Watkins High School is the top-rated high school in Missouri, according to a nationwide annual ranking.
Fall is in the air—or it is at Neiman Marcus, at least! The Saint Louis Fashion Fund was celebrated at the recent Neiman Marcus Trend Event, during which the organization's board members acted as stylists and created fall looks on mannequins on display.
Parenthood is a mix of joy and concern—joy at the gift of your precious child, and concern that he is growing and developing normally. It’s normal to wonder about your child’s progress and compare him to other children. Most babies reach their developmental milestones at or around the expected time, but identifying a potential problem is important.
Gift of Reading Celebration
Still fresh off its chic remodel last year, the Colonial Marketplace has quickly become a boutique shopping and dining destination. The DESCO Group, which purchased the property in September 2011, brought in a unique mix of high-end shops, delectable dining and specialty services that have caught the attention of the area’s savvy shoppers. With all this buzz, the parking lot can fill up fast. But don’t worry about nabbing a space—complimentary valet service is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays.
St. Louis' arts community is gearing up for a big season of live shows this fall! We went straight to the top and asked local arts and entertainment leaders what they're most excited about in the upcoming season:
From Forest Park to the Saint Louis Galleria, past Town & Country Crossing and beyond, Clayton Road can take you all over the area. Peppered with stores, the strip between South McKnight Road and Highway 40 is particularly notable.
Much of Old Webster is rich in history. Today, shoppers can dine on gourmet burgers or sip fine wines, breathe new life into their closet, try their hand at an art project or transform the look of their home, all within a few square blocks.
Since its beginning in the 1870s, the Central West End has served as a sought-after St. Louis residential district. These days, the CWE is an urban oasis full of homes, restaurants, bars, art, entertainment, and—of course—shopping.
Kirkwood’s historic and walkable downtown is the modern-day embodiment of family-friendly, small-town Americana. On any given day, you can stop by the Kirkwood Farmers Market, watch the trains go by (or hop on one if you so choose!), and enjoy a cold treat from The Custard Station while you shop.

Movies that revolve around food and cooking make me nervous. It’s almost as if the director thinks he can sacrifice a plot for a lingering shot of a bell pepper--or a magical moment of whisking an egg. And while food is an incredible thing to look at, assembling a salad does not a movie make. This film, I’m delighted to say, was more than a pleasant surprise. Yes, the food is mouth-watering, but the story is even better.
