Since it opened earlier this year, Three Flags Tavern has been one of the tougher reservations to get around town. After finally getting a table, it became immediately obvious why folks have been crowding this establishment.

Whether you call it cobalt, sapphire or midnight, bold blue is the hottest hue for fall—and not just a hint here and there: This shade is meant to be worn head to toe and without apology.
My mom is an amazing cook—so much so that I never really learned how to do it myself. Sure, she had me help prep ingredients, stir this or mix that, but I left the heavy lifting to her—dinners just turned out better that way. Now that I’m a ‘grown-up,’ I have begun dipping my toes into cooking, to mixed results (and, if I’m being honest, several burned, bland or otherwise inedible meals). So when the opportunity arose to take a cooking class at Schnucks, I jumped at it faster than I can reach for a takeout menu.

Many years ago, when I lived in Europe, I dined al fresco in a café in southern France. I ordered a bottle of Vouvray to pair with my seafood dish. To my surprise, the server brought a Champagne-shaped bottle to the table. However, my French was a bit rusty so I accepted the bottle.
Rolls-Royce. The name alone conjures up images of beautiful people getting out of fancy cars. For gearheads, though, a Rolls-Royce is an exquisitely engineered and built machine that represents the pinnacle of automotive fabrication.

Pinot gris and pinot grigio are the same. It all depends on the country where the grape is grown. Italy and other parts of Europe know this gray-red grape as pinot grigio, the place of origin from which it gained worldwide popularity. Alsace, France; Oregon; Washington; Australia; New Zealand; and other parts of the world know it as pinot gris.

Story: Dorante is an elegant, upper-class cad. He’s journeyed to Paris in 1644 in search of a wife, unaware that his father already has decided his marital fate. While there, Dorante stumbles upon an amiable chap named Cliton, an impoverished but decent fellow who needs a steady job. Cliton convinces Dorante that he should be Dorante’s servant, which appeals to the gentleman’s vanity.
Movies that revolve around food and cooking make me nervous. It’s almost as if the director thinks he can sacrifice a plot for a lingering shot of a bell pepper--or a magical moment of whisking an egg. And while food is an incredible thing to look at, assembling a salad does not a movie make. This film, I’m delighted to say, was more than a pleasant surprise. Yes, the food is mouth-watering, but the story is even better.
So, The Hundred-Foot Journey came out last week to much critical acclaim. The movie is vibrant and sumptuous; and the director, Lasse Hallström, films food like it is the sexiest, most beautiful thing on the planet. Movies about food range from the exotic and sensual to the dark—and even disturbing. I have to admit, it was fun coming up with a list of the best films about food. To clarify, these films are actually about food. Diner is one of the funniest movies ever. Its title implies it is about food; however, it is not, and thus doesn't make the cut. So, here is my top 10 list of the best food films I've seen:
A teaspoon of butter is more than 51 calories, while a teaspoon of beurre blanc sauce is just approximately 33 calories. This beurre blanc sauce not only adds flavor to any dish, but also gives it a light and delicate texture.

Story: At the Charenton asylum in France in 1807, the most notorious inmate is Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade, an aristocrat better known as the Marquis de Sade. He was born in 1740 and spent 32 years in various prisons before dying in 1814 at Charenton, where he was sent in 1801.
As an interior designer, each night as I fall asleep I pray that “people with money will wake up with good taste, and people with good taste will wake up with money.” I do jest, but there is something to be said about the Victorian era, when people’s fortunes seemed to demand that they build some sort of monument to their wealth—and no expense was spared to ensure that it was detailed with the finest of the fine, from the cellar to the attic. That time period reflected a real respect and appreciation for those who were experts in fine carpentry, hand-painted finishes, custom furniture and passamenteri, that in many ways, has been lost today, not because people don’t care, but because our desire as a nation to have instant gratification overrules the joy of the journey to beauty.
