Notre Dame High School community members welcomed nine high school students and two teachers from its sister school in Kyoto, Japan. The guests visited St. Louis for four days of American culture, as well as offered Japanese cultural demonstrations, attended class with their American peers and visited area attractions, including the Gateway Arch and City Museum.
Fans of fine food and the works of The Bard will be pleased to find out that Bixby’s, located on the second floor of the Missouri History Museum, is partnering with Shakespeare Festival St. Louis for this year’s productions of Henry IV and Henry V. Bixby’s will host an intimate and elegant communal dining experience for five nights throughout the run of the show. Guests can make reservations to dine at a community table, under the stars, and enjoy a lavish full-course meal, focused on dining with local influence. This experience is limited to 40 guests per night. Tickets are $50 and include a reserved seat for the show; dinners begin at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at sfstl.com.
Considering one of the plot points of this film is how critics—who have no talent or ability in their field of expertise—can devastate their subjects, I am a tad hesitant to proceed. Let me start by saying this: I have seen every film Jon Favreau has directed. He is an extremely talented director, and lets the movie speak without being heavy-handed or pretentious. Like his work in front of the camera, his direction is charming. When Favreau decided to make this movie, he came on board with a director, a screenwriter and a leading man. What he apparently did not have was an editor.
Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis will be kicking off its Unsung Heroes Dinner Series on Monday, June 23, at 6 p.m. The dinner will feature six of St. Louis’ finest sous chefs, underutilized parts of a hog and products from local farmers. Participating sous chefs include SHIMON DIAMOND of Cielo Restaurant & Bar, JUSTIN MCMILLEN of Sidney Street Café, RYAN MCDONALD of Juniper, JOSH POLETTI of The Libertine, ALEX FELDMEIER of Brasserie, and SUMMER WRIGHT of Floreat Bakery. The opening cocktail reception will feature Cielo’s Four Roses Bourbon and a variety of local brews, and the dinner will incorporate plenty of fresh products from Jones Heritage and Such and Such Farm. The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis will be hosting a Spring Coffee Dinner on Saturday, May 17. The event will feature Kaldi’s Coffees in all menu courses created by the culinary team of The Ritz, led by executive chef MELISSA LEE. There also will be a special appearance by Kaldi's own FRANK MCGINTY, along with paired coffee cocktails and Urban Chestnut Beers. The dinner begins at 6 p.m, with tickets priced at $150 per guest. The dinner is the first in an ongoing new series of seasonal dining events to be presented by the hotel. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Huge congratulations to chefs GERARD CRAFT and KEVIN NASHAN, who have both been chosen as finalists for the James Beard Foundation Awards Best Chef: Midwest. Craft and Nashan, along with KEVIN WILLMANN of Farmhaus, BEN POREMBA of Elaia & Olio and JOSH GALLIANO of The Libertine were all named semifinalists for the award last month. The Cup’s newest shop is now open for business in Chesterfield at 1590 Clarkson Road, between Talbots and Chico’s. The Chesterfield location offers The Cup’s signature cupcakes, as well as sugar cookies, cakewiches, Kaldi’s coffee beverages and gelato. Congratulations to the folks at Sidney Street Cafe, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this month. To commemorate the milestone, chef KEVIN NASHAN and his kitchen staff will be partnering with 10 chefs from St. Louis and beyond for a one-of-a-kind dining experience early next year. Community members celebrated the 2013 Hannukkah Celebration at Schnucks Ladue Crossing at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, with Hannukah music performed by the H.F. Epstein Hebrew Academy choir, storytelling and free gifts for children. Claudette Kirk, The DESCO Group property manager, also presented a check to Epstein headmaster Rabbi Avi Greene.
The love for donuts in the Lou continues unabated. The latest purveyor of these sweet treats to make the scene is the Vincent Van Doughnut food truck, which hit the streets this month. The mobile bake shop will be selling a variety of classic favorites, as well as custom creations out of Clyde, a vintage 1960 Ford Grumman Olson step van. Fine-dining stalwart Tony’s restaurant will have a fresh look come 2014. In January, the restaurant will undergo 10,000-square-feet of renovations, including new flooring and lighting, as well as expanding the bar and rearranging artwork and furniture. The Wine and the Cherry rooms also will be updated. SPACE Architecture + Design has signed on to do the renovations.
Seoul Taco has been one of the top food trucks in the St. Louis area for a while now. Last year, the owners opened a brick-and-mortar location in the Delmar Loop, which has proven to be every bit as popular.
The air is finally getting a little chillier. All Hallow’s Eve is near. And there’s a coffee shop in South St. Louis with a logo that features a bearded Jolly Roger (a closer look also reveals a coffee branch and a portafilter replacing the usual crossbones).
Story: Ben enters a farm house that appears to be abandoned. Inside, though, he finds a barefoot young woman named Barbra who seems to be in shock. Eventually, Ben learns that Barbra and her brother Johnny had been attacked by “the living dead,” and that Johnny is dead. Barbra ran to the house before slipping into shock. Ben abandoned his truck, which needs fuel, and is seeking shelter in the same house.
It seems everyone is becoming a foodie, notes Butler’s Pantry owner Richard Nix Jr. And while a room full of people with similar interests could make for great conversation, a house filled with food experts might leave a host or hostess anxious. The Libertine has been making quite a splash with evening diners since opening its doors earlier this year. Now, chef JOSH GALLIANO is making his fine cuisine available to daytime customers, as well. The Libertine's new lunch menu, available Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m to 2 p.m., will feature such delicacies as ramen, Bahn Mi and Galliano Fried Chicken Salad, among others. This husband-and wife team met while living in Chicago, worked together on organic farms in Australia and New Zealand and now runs St. Louis vegetarian food truck Lulu's Local Eatery, complete with truck-rooftop garden.
