For the second year in a row, the St. Louis stop on the Cochon 555 Heritage Barbecue Contest tour will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. The event on Sunday, Sept. 14, is from 4 to 8 p.m., and will feature five local chefs putting their skills to the test barbecuing whole pigs. A panel of 20 judges will weigh in to determine who gets the title of King or Queen of Barbecue. Participating chefs this year include the Four Season's own GIAN NICOLA COLUCCI; JENNY CLEVELAND and ERIC HEATH of Cleaveland Heath; PATRICK CONNOLLY of Basso; JOSH GALLIANO of The Libertine; and LOU ROOK of Annie Gunn's. There also will be a bevy of beers, bourbons, cheeses and other culinary delicacies to sample. General admission tickets are $100 (VIP tickets for early admission are $200). Hodak's has become a bit of a local institution over the years. This South City fixture, which takes up the corner of McNair and Gravois avenues and then some, has been around since 1962 and continues to attract a loyal fan base.
Story: Fresh out of prison, Percy Talbott arrives in the middle of winter in the town of Gilead, Wisconsin in the 1990s, a place she selected based on a photo she saved from a travel book. Sheriff Joe Sutter meets her and, though puzzled why anyone would want to settle in the depressed hamlet, arranges for her to work at the Spitfire Grill, the only restaurant in town.
Movies that revolve around food and cooking make me nervous. It’s almost as if the director thinks he can sacrifice a plot for a lingering shot of a bell pepper--or a magical moment of whisking an egg. And while food is an incredible thing to look at, assembling a salad does not a movie make. This film, I’m delighted to say, was more than a pleasant surprise. Yes, the food is mouth-watering, but the story is even better.
So, The Hundred-Foot Journey came out last week to much critical acclaim. The movie is vibrant and sumptuous; and the director, Lasse Hallström, films food like it is the sexiest, most beautiful thing on the planet. Movies about food range from the exotic and sensual to the dark—and even disturbing. I have to admit, it was fun coming up with a list of the best films about food. To clarify, these films are actually about food. Diner is one of the funniest movies ever. Its title implies it is about food; however, it is not, and thus doesn't make the cut. So, here is my top 10 list of the best food films I've seen:

Most parents of toddlers are familiar with the tiny face of disgust peering back at them above a plate of peas—or bananas, green beans, the list goes on—shaking from side to side: No way. Wanting to teach children about nutrition in a fun and inviting way, a group of local parents have teamed up to create Kitchen Club Kids, a series of three award-winning ‘recipe adventure story books,’ for ages 2 to 6. Each book, End of the Rainbow Fruit Salad, Garden Safari Vegetable Soup, and Feed Your Senses Homemade Bread (due out later this year), includes a recipe told in traditional storybook format, as well as the real recipe the story is based on at the end of the book, so that parents and children can work together in the kitchen to prepare nutritious meals. Eluka Moore, Kitchen Club Kids co-creator and author, and soon-to-be mom of two, shared the genesis story of the books, as well as tips for parents on teaching their kids about nutrition and trying new foods—even, perhaps, peas.

Local mobile donut purveyor Vincent Van Doughnut won big on the recent season premiere of Cooking Channel's Donut Wars earlier this month. Owner BRIAN MARSDEN and his pastry chef assistant, JAMIE HARDESTY, took home first-place honors and a cool $10,000. Their winning confections over three rounds were The Bellagio, featuring a caramel pastry creme filling with chocolate ganache glaze and hazelnut caramel crunch; The Venetian, with a ricotta pastry cream filling and a lemon glaze with pistachios and tarragon; and The Flamingo, a maraschino cherry cake donut with a maraschino cherry glaze and silver nonpareils. Congrats!
Walking across the small parking behind Adam's Smokehouse, you're immediately enveloped in the rich aroma of cooking meat. Even before you cross the restaurant's threshold, it's obvious you're in for a delicious experience. Adam's is one of the latest in the current boom of barbecue places cropping up around town.

Congratulations to the folks at Morgan Street Brewery. The local craft-beer maker took home multiple medals at the recent Los Angeles International Beer Competition, including a Gold for When Helles Freezes Over; a Silver for its Honey Wheat; and Bronze medals for its Winter, Golden Pilsner and Black Bear brews. In other beer news, the William K. Busch Brewing Company won a passel of awards at the U.S. Open Beer Championships, held earlier this month in Atlanta. Kraftig Light was awarded its third consecutive Gold Medal in the American Light category, while the company's Kraftig Lager also took home Gold in the American Premium Lager category. More than 3,000 beers and ciders competed in 81 categories at the competition. Well done!

Located on Euclid Avenue between Lindell Boulevard and Maryland Avenue, it's easy to miss this eatery with all of the hustle and bustle in that area, but definitely well worth looking for.
