Frankly, this is one of those movie reviews where the space would be better filled by giving you my savory beef stew recipe than actually discussing the film. I mean, I could tell you that halfway through the movie, pigmies run in and jab the audience with pointy sticks. But if you’re going to see it, you’re going to see it. On the flip side, I could tell you that going to see this movie is like watching Pretty Woman, sitting next to George Clooney, while getting a foot massage, eating Champagne truffles on Prozac. But if you don’t want to see it, you’re not going to see it.

In his glitzy burgundy jacket and ruffled dress shirt, Steve Lipstein made his way across the parquet floor toward the middle of the stage, where he joined hands with Lucy Fitzgerald and broke into a choreographed East Coast swing routine to Footloose. While dancing for a crowd might be the norm for a pro like Fitzgerald, it was a new and nerve-wracking experience for Lipstein, president and CEO of BJC HealthCare and 2013 Dancing with the St. Louis Stars champion.

Fine-dining stalwart Tony’s restaurant will have a fresh look come 2014. In January, the restaurant will undergo 10,000-square-feet of renovations, including new flooring and lighting, as well as expanding the bar and rearranging artwork and furniture. The Wine and the Cherry rooms also will be updated. SPACE Architecture + Design has signed on to do the renovations.

For Mains, there’s Braised Pork Shank with caramelized vegetables; Maine Sea Scallops with pumpkin risotto; and Red Wine Braised Beef Short Rib with autumn vegetable ragout (shown), among others. WIL FERNANDEZ-CRUZ has been tapped to be the new executive chef at Winslow's Home in University City. He replaces chef CARY MCDOWELL, who left recently to take a position with the Euclid Hospitality Group, which includes the Pi Pizzeria restaurants and the recently opened Gringo in the Central West End. Fernandez-Cruz came to St. Louis last year from NYC to be the executive chef at The Restaurant at the Cheshire Inn, and currently he's running the kitchen at Ibby's on Washington University's Danforth campus.

St. Louis District Golf Association: Justin Wrozier
Five Bistro started out in the Grove but moved to The Hill a couple of years ago, where its reputation as one of the most creative and innovative local eateries has been solidified. The name of the restaurant comes from the five senses Chef Antony Devoti and his staff strive to stimulate with their fare. Devoti is a well-known adherent of the doctrine of nose-to-tail cooking, and he uses most every part of the animal in his dishes. He's also a champion of local producers and his creations are full of ingredients from area farms and purveyors. Five also has an impressive garden behind the building that yields many vegetables and herbs for the kitchen, and the staff is happy to give guests a tour of the rows.

The Saint Louis Art Museum’s new restaurant, Panorama, is the latest ‘work of art’ to be unveiled at the museum’s new East Building. The restaurant features a farm-to-fork menu and is led by executive chef Edward Farrow, who is known for forming partnerships with local growers. He most recently served as chef at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, where he was twice named a ‘Local Hero’ by Edible Phoenix. Panorama is operated by Bon Appetit Management Company.

St. Louis became the center of the opera universe this month, when jazz composer Terence Blanchard’s Champion marked its world premiere at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. I was fortunate enough to be in the audience when Mr. Blanchard himself took to the stage for what seemed to be the longest standing ovation I’ve ever experienced.
