Hendel's Market Cafe, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, is housed in a former grocery and general store that was founded in 1873. The building was transformed into a restaurant in 1994, and it retains all of that rustic charm.

For the second year in a row, the St. Louis stop on the Cochon 555 Heritage Barbecue Contest tour will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. The event on Sunday, Sept. 14, is from 4 to 8 p.m., and will feature five local chefs putting their skills to the test barbecuing whole pigs. A panel of 20 judges will weigh in to determine who gets the title of King or Queen of Barbecue. Kudos to St. James Winery. Its Friendship School White Wine was named Best White Wine at California’s Long Beach Grand Cru Competition earlier this month. The winery also took home five additional gold medals, seven silver medals and a bronze medal for its other entries in the competition.
Congratulations to the folks at Morgan Street Brewery. The local craft-beer maker took home multiple medals at the recent Los Angeles International Beer Competition, including a Gold for When Helles Freezes Over; a Silver for its Honey Wheat; and Bronze medals for its Winter, Golden Pilsner and Black Bear brews. In other beer news, the William K. Busch Brewing Company won a passel of awards at the U.S. Open Beer Championships, held earlier this month in Atlanta. Kraftig Light was awarded its third consecutive Gold Medal in the American Light category, while the company's Kraftig Lager also took home Gold in the American Premium Lager category. More than 3,000 beers and ciders competed in 81 categories at the competition. Well done!
