Nadene Cherry and Elliot Pessis were acquaintances in college. Five years later, their path’s crossed at a charity event in Chicago, and soon thereafter, a romance blossomed. The couple has distinct memories of what made them realize each had met their soul mate. “I had never encountered someone who possessed the sheer beauty, wit and compassion with which Nadene is blessed!” says Elliot. And while Nadene appreciates the importance Elliot places on family, stuffing his own blue-cheese olives for martinis on one of their dates sealed the deal!
Early in their relationship Nadene gave Elliot the book: A Lovely Love Story about two dinosaurs that fell in love. Inspired by the book, Elliot popped the question by presenting Nadene with a stuffed dinosaur holding a ring in its mouth. He surprised her further by arranging brunch with their families. “When we arrived, Elliot’s family and my parents were already there to celebrate—it was an amazing day! Nadene recalls.
The couple was joined by family and friends on Sept. 10 at the Four Seasons Hotel for a wedding ceremony officiated by Rabbi Howard Kaplansky. The bride wore her grandmother’s blue sapphire ring and Elliot’s grandmother’s diamond earrings. A reception followed, and Nadene surprised her new husband by performing Stevie Wonder’s song, For Once in My Life. “I took voice lessons for six months under cover and practiced with the Fabulous Motown Review during visits to St. Louis. He was in shock! she explains. Nothing could ruin their perfect evening. “The train on my dress was in shreds by the third song, but I turned it into a fashion statement and rocked it!”
The newlyweds honeymooned in South Africa and Mozambique, where they toured Cape Town, the surrounding vineyards and enjoyed a four-day safari. They reside in Chicago.
