Their story…On Jan. 1, 2006, Matthew Westerheide began the New Year with a fresh start and a new possibility. At the prompting of his older sister, Chrissy, he called Rebecca Lubeley whose brother Ryan was dating Chrissy. “Both of us were tired of the bar scene,” Rebecca recalls, “and my brother and Matt’s sister originally were encouraging a friendship, however, one thing led to another and here we are.” (Incidentally, their siblings were married last year.)
On a beautiful but unusually hot day in October 2008, Matt and Rebecca visited the Art Museum and the Zoo. “Then Matt suggested we take a paddleboat around the Grand Basin,” she remembers. “When we reached the base of Art Hill and he proposed, everyone around us applauded!”
Family ties were also prominent on their wedding day. Since Matt’s mom’s family, dating back to his great-grandparents, is from the Hill, the couple’s decision to marry at Saint Ambrose was an easy choice. And with the bride’s ‘inside connection’ at Lubeley’s Bakery, an array of enticing confections was offered to guests at the reception, including beautifully iced cupcakes and cookies, fruit bars, cannoli, and a magnificent wedding cake featuring Swarovski crystals (to match the bride’s gown) and layers of raspberry-amaretto, white with strawberry filling, marble, red velvet and carrot cake, all made by Rebecca’s father and aunt, Sue Suardi.
The bride and groom honeymooned in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, where they relaxed on the beach and kayaked in the ocean. The couple resides in downtown St. Louis.
