Their Story:
A chance meeting through mutual friends in 2007 led to a long-distance courtship and a blossoming romance. The rest, as they say, is history!
As members of the young leaders’ board for the American Ireland Fund, the couple, along with Colleen’s sister and her boyfriend, traveled to Ireland to attend the group’s annual conference. Ireland has always held a special place in Colleen’s heart, having previously lived in Dublin while her father served as the U.S. Ambassador for two years. Following the conference, Chad arranged for Colleen’s parents to join them on June 23, 2010, (the ninth anniversary of Randolph Richardson’s passing) at the Park Kenmare Hotel for a surprise proposal. Following a toast in honor of his late father, Chad dropped to one knee and popped the question as he pulled the engagement ring (tied to a green ribbon) from his Champagne flute—an homage to the way Chad’s father proposed. Colleen’s resounding ‘Yes’ was interrupted by her sister yelling, “wrong hand!” and a ‘golf-gallery clap’ from nearby hotel guests.
The couple was joined by family and friends on Oct.15, at St. Ann’s Church of West Palm Beach for a wedding ceremony officiated by the Rev. Brian King. The bride’s mother sang Ave Maria, and the couple shared an Irish blessing in addition to the traditional ring exchange. The bride wore a gold bracelet made from her mother’s pearls and a blue monogrammed ribbon (a gift from her mother-in-law) was pinned into the train of her dress. The groomsmen wore belts embroidered with their initials and other personalized symbols (a gift from the groom). A reception followed, where guests enjoyed a cocktail hour with Veuve Clicquot Champagne and a St. Louis favorite, toasted ravioli. Colleen and Chad shared their first dance as husband and wife to a blended version of The Cure and Katie Melua’s song, Just Like Heaven.
They newlyweds honeymooned at Tucker’s Point Resort in Bermuda. They reside in Chicago.
Colleen Kenny is the daughter of Margaret and James Kenny of Chicago. Chad Richardson is the son of Mary Wentworth-Barrett of Webster Groves and the late Randolph Richardson.
