IMMEDIATELY AFTER HER FIRST DATE with Chris Sommers in October 2008, Anne Schuermann had a passing thought about her future—one that she quickly dismissed. “I have to confess that while driving home, I had a feeling he was going to be the guy who I would marry someday,” Anne recalls. “Then my next thought was, Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I just thought that.

Fast forward to January 2011, it was forecasted that a big snowstorm was headed for St. Louis. “Chris had lived in San Francisco for 10 years, and he just said, Let’s go to San Francisco! We left the very next day, and there we were in San Francisco, watching our friends post photos on Facebook of the snow on their back patios—and we were looking at the ocean,” she notes. Avid runners, the two decided to go for a run across the Golden Gate Bridge. “At that point, I had just recovered from foot surgery,” she says. “I was thinking, Gosh I’m so lucky—I didn’t know if I was going to be able to run again, and here I am in this beautiful sunny weather running across the Golden Gate Bridge! Does it get any better?” Just then, Chris stopped midway to take some pictures. Anne was taking in the views and then turned to find him down on one knee. “I was completely shocked! After that, we didn’t run anymore—we walked back holding hands.”

The ceremony took place Oct. 28 downtown at The Old Cathedral. (Many will remember this date as a big date in St. Louis World Series history.) “The only snafu of the day was the traffic,” Anne explains. “But there is absolutely nothing I would change about the day. The biggest memory that stands out for me was when the doors of the church opened and I saw Chris. Walking down the aisle and seeing all of our closest friends and family who had traveled and took time out from their schedules to be there was so touching.”

At the reception, a personal touch to note was a special pizza delivery from Pi late in the evening, arranged by Chris, who opened the St. Louis favorite in 2008.
