    In the ‘that’s why they say pencil it in’ department…We have a new date for LN’s annual summer fête, Elegant Entertaining Made Easy, with design editor ALAN E. BRAINERD. The event will now take place at Neiman Marcus on Thursday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. Learn the art of preparing sophisticated and creative table settings, whether you’re entertaining formally or poolside, and enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres from BUTLER’S PANTRY.     Sixteen St. Louis-area arts organizations are getting a boost from PNC FOUNDATION, which recently handed out $500,000 in grants through its PNC Arts Alive initiative. The grants are the first of $1 million to be awarded in the next two years in hopes of making the arts more accessible for area residents. Recipients include Contemporary Art Museum, which will use the money to fund the PNC Arts Alive Bus, a mobile art studio that will carry art teachers, supplies and interactive activities to the community. Other awardees are COCA, Chesterfield Arts, Craft Alliance, Cultural Festivals, Foundry Art Centre, HotCity Theatre, Jazz St. Louis, Laumeier Sculpture Park, Metro Theater Company, Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Ballet, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, St. Louis Symphony, The Black Rep and The Sheldon Foundation.

    Internationally acclaimed St. Louis artist and poet EDWARD BOCCIA is turning 90, and to celebrate, they’re throwing a party at A.J. Brewington in the CWE. The June 24 event will feature a drawings show (1948-2009), cocktails, and of course, cake. Boccia, best known for his abstract expressionist and figurative works, is professor emeritus of Washington University School of Art. His works have been featured in some of America’s top museums and across the world, including exhibitions in Italy and Greece.

    This month’s issue of Women’s Health magazine shines the spotlight on local fitness trainer RITA FRIEDERICH, who was one of only four women chosen nationwide to appear in an ad campaign for Crest toothpaste celebrating healthy living. Friedrich, who works at Fitness Connection for Women in Webster Groves, entered an online essay contest earlier this year. Her prize included a three-day trip to New York City for the photo shoot.
