The HUMANE SOCIETY OF MISSOURI is busy conducting interviews, in-person meetings and home visits with potential adoptive families for Trooper, the puppy who barely survived after being dragged behind a pickup truck along I-55 in November 2012. The now-1 1/2-year-old dog has endured seven surgeries and has received advanced therapy treatment to assist with his healing, mobility, circulation and pain management. Trooper, who became available for adoption in early November, currently is in a foster home, where he is undergoing extensive training and getting plenty of social exposure. The goal is to find him a forever family just in time for the holidays.

Ready for your close-up? Ladue News is looking to feature YOU in an upcoming issue! We are compiling a gallery of readers who are helping us spread the joys of the season by participating in our annual HOLIDAY WISH LIST DRIVE to benefit FOOD OUTREACH. The organization, founded in 1988, serves more than half a million nutritious meals to 2,100 HIV/AIDS or cancer patients each year. Collection bins are available at Ladue News (8811 Ladue Road in the Colonial Marketplace). Wish List items include canned food items like tuna (in water), turkey, chicken, salmon, corn, green beans, mixed vegetables, mandarin oranges, pineapple chunks and peaches. Also needed: electric can openers, blenders, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo) and gas cards (for meal home-delivery program). Come on Friday, Dec. 20, from 1 to 4:30 pm to get your photo taken! Items will be collected through Monday, Dec. 23.

Congratulations to TONY LA RUSSA, the winningest manager in Cardinals history, who will soon be in the Baseball Hall of Fame (HOF). The announcement came this week from the HOF’s expansion era committee. Along with La Russa, former Cardinals player/manager JOE TORRE and former Atlanta manager BOBBY COX will be inducted in Cooperstown July 27.

This weekend marks the 25th year for the Sheer Elegance Fashion Show, the signature fundraiser for the MATHEWS-DICKEY BOYS’ & GIRLS’ CLUB that recognizes young women for outstanding achievements in academics, community service and citizenship. The Dec. 14 event at The Chase Park Plaza, themed ‘A Silver Dream of Milan in The Lou,’ will feature local Project Runway designers, celebrity models and longtime co-emcees WENDY WIESE and CHRISTINE BUCK. Event chair is NINA CALDWELL; co-chair is CAROL VOSS.

You’ll find the area’s newest bookstore in Kirkwood, where STL BOOKS recently opened its doors to the public. The store’s owner, ROBIN THEISS, lives in the neighborhood and has been involved in literary pursuits all her life—as a writer, publisher, book collector and former president of the St. Louis Writers Guild. The store, at 100 W. Jefferson Ave., features new and used titles with an emphasis on classic and contemporary works, as well as the arts, philosophy, history, children’s literature and St. Louis-related topics. Her union-carpenter husband, RON, built the store; and their daughter, ERIN, is manager.

What looks like sunshine and tastes like citrus, floral and tropical fruits? Give yourself a gold star if you answered vignoles! To celebrate Missouri’s second-most grown grape, GEORG RIEDEL, the 10th-generation head of Riedel Crystal, flew in from Austria to lead a panel of Missouri wine industry experts in determining the basis for creating the first-ever glass for the vignoles varietal. The event, held last week at Mount Pleasant Estates in Augusta, was hosted by the Missouri Wine and Grape Board.
