Emmy-, Golden Globe-, and Tony-award winning actress GLENN CLOSE will be in St. Louis for several appearances this month to raise awareness about mental illness. She created her campaign, BringChange2Mind.org, after her sister Jessie was diagnosed with mental illness. Close, who is working with organizations across the country to address the stigma of mental illness, has recently partnered with the KARLA SMITH FOUNDATION, a Metro East nonprofit that provides support to those who have a loved one suffering from mental illness and those who’ve lost a family member to suicide. During her visit here April 16 to 17, the actress will attend the ‘Change a Mind, Change a Life’ fundraising dinner at the Four Seasons. Close also will sing ‘America the Beautiful’ at a Cardinals game and throw out the first pitch.

Bravo to STAGES ST. LOUIS for winning six KEVIN KLINE AWARDS, including ‘Outstanding Production of a Musical’—twice! The Drowsy Chaperone and Guys and Dolls tied for top honors during the fifth annual awards ceremony held last month. Also winners: DAVID SCHMITTOU (Out standing Lead Actor in a Musical), JOHN ALBAN COUGHLAN (Outstanding Sup porting Actor in a Musical), CHRISTIANNE TISDALE (Outstanding Sup porting Actress in a Musical) and The Drowsy Chaperone (Outstanding Ensemble).          Artwork and personal objects belonging to MICHELANGELO, venerated relics (bone fragments) of saints PETER and PAUL, historical maps and documents, and precious objects from the Papal Mass are just some of the items that will be on display during ‘Vatican Splendors,’ the colossal exhibition coming to the Missouri History Museum beginning May 15. St. Louis is one of only three U.S. stops for the exhibition, which features more than 170 works and objects that have never been displayed or seen outside the Vatican. Tickets go on sale to the public April 19.

It’s time for LN’s annual Mother’s Day Look-A-Like contest, and we’re looking for photos from readers like you! Send us a picture of mother and child(ren), complete with names, phone numbers and the community you live in by April 12, 2010, and we’ll publish as many photos as space allows. Send submissions to: Meredith Bush, Ladue News, 8811 Ladue Road, Suite D, St. Louis, MO 63124 or lnintern@laduenews.com.

Grammy-award winning songstress SYLVIA McNAIR is headlining next month’s sixth annual Evening of Hope fundraiser to benefit HOPE HAPPENS. McNair’s repertoire for the May 6 concert at The Sheldon includes favorites from The Great American Songbook.

Ahoy, mateys! National Geographic’s ‘Real Pirates’ exhibition is coming to the SAINT LOUIS SCIENCE CENTER beginning May 1. The interactive exhibition features treasure and artifacts from the Whydah, the first fully authenticated pirate ship discovered in U.S. waters. The ship was located in 1984 by underwater explorer BARRY CLIFFORD, who continues to excavate the wreck site today. The Whydah sank off the coast of Cape Cod some 300 years ago. Shiver me timbers!

This fall, world-renowned soprano RENEE FLEMING will take the stage for the SAINT LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’s 2010 gala. The Oct. 2 concert at Powell Hall will be followed by dinner and dancing in the atrium of the Wells Fargo Advisors building downtown.

A warm St. Louis welcome to new RITZ-CARLTON general manager PATRICK FRANSSEN. Before coming here, the veteran hotelier served as GM at The Ritz-Carlton in Key Biscayne, Fla., where he oversaw an $18 million room renovation. Similarly, Franssen is supervising the multi-million dollar makeover of the Clayton hotel’s meeting space, which will be unveiled later this month.

Don’t forget to visit us next weekend at the 2010 Spring Home & Garden Expo at West County Center. Stop by the Ladue News booth April 9 to 11 to say hi and pick up a paper!
