There’s sure to be plenty of oohs and aahs at next week’s LANDMARKS ASSOCIATION’s Most Enhanced Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation. This year’s ceremony takes place at the newly renovated SUN THEATER in Grand Center on Thursday, May 22. The theater, which has been vacant for decades, was recently restored by the Lawrence Group for the use of the Grand Center Arts Academy. The Most Enhanced Awards honor trades people, rehabbers, architects and developers for their work on historic buildings throughout the St. Louis area. For tickets and more information, call 421-6474 or visit landmarks-stl.org.

It was a surprise this week for two area high school teachers, the winners of the PEABODY ENERGY Leader in Education award for the 2013-2014 school year. De Smet Jesuit High School math teacher and department chair DANIEL LIKOS and Notre Dame High School family and consumer sciences teacher BEVERLY MILLER were each surprised with the honor during May 14 assemblies at their respective schools. Likos, who works to engage students by making math fun and interesting, created the Math Problem of the Week, where studetns try to decipher a weekly logic puzzle. He also created the school’s Mathematics Academic Team, and runs an after-school math tutoring program. Miller teaches practical life skills like nutrition and child development. She also moderates a class in which students use the skills they learned to give back to the community by sewing for fundraisers and cooking meals at Ronald McDonald houses. Each award recipient received a $1,000 check.

A 28-year teaching veteran has been named the ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY’s 2014 Educator of the Year. PAULA BERNER currently teaches at Litzinger School in the Special School District. As an educator for students with special needs, Berner organizes Litzinger’s Holiday Musical each year, where every child plays a role, regardless of his or her disability. Her students also attend Symphony education concerts at Powell Hall and have taken part in the Symphony Volunteer Association’s Instrument Playground program for several years. Berner received her award on stage earlier this month from music director DAVID ROBERTSON. Bravo, Ms. Berner!

SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN is the recipient of the fourth annual International Humanitarian of the Year award from the WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL OF ST. LOUIS. The award is in recognition of the hospital’s efforts in providing advanced medical treatment for children with disabilities across the world, without regard to the ability of the patient’s family to pay. Shriners will be honored with the award on Thursday, June 19, at the Four Seasons Hotel downtown. For more information, visit wac-stl.org.

Don’t miss out: Tickets are still available for the upcoming 2014 CENTRAL WEST END ASSOCIATION HOUSE & GARDEN TOUR, which takes place Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1. Five historic mansions along Portland Place, one of St. Louis’ most exclusive streets, will be featured, the first time in 10 years that these homes have been available for public viewing. House Tour tickets ($22 in advance, $25 at the door) are available for purchase at all Pulaski Bank locations, Coffee Cartel and Left Bank Books, or by calling the Central West End Association at 367-2220 or visiting TheCWE.org.
