St. Louis is now home to the WORLD’S LARGEST CHESS PIECE, as certified by the folks at Guinness World Record. The 14-foot, 16-inch tall piece—a king—is 6-feet wide at the base. It was unveiled earlier this week to kick off the U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis in the Central West End. Tournament play began May 8 and will run through May 20.

Six historic mansions from Washington Terrace will be featured this weekend on the 2012 CENTRAL WEST END ASSOCIATION HOUSE & GARDEN TOUR. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 13. Proceeds from the house tour benefit the Central West End Association. Visit TheCWE.org for more info.

Memorial Day Monday marks the 40th anniversary of GYPSY CARAVAN, one of the Midwest’s largest antique, craft and flea markets. The event on the campus of University of Missouri—St. Louis takes place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine.

Ready, set, taste…The 18th annual TASTE OF CLAYTON foodfest takes place on Sunday, June 3. Fifteen of Clayton’s finest restaurants will be sampling tastes, and festivities will include live music and a kid’s area. The festival will be held in downtown Clayton on Brentwood Boulevard, between Forsyth Boulevard and Maryland Avenue.

During Field Day ceremonies at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School last week, students and staff paused to remember LIL MUSIAL, wife of Cardinal great STAN MUSIAL. The Musials have been longtime supporters of the school. The tribute included a check presentation from the school to Cardinals GM JOHN MOZELIAK on behalf of Cardinals Care. Mrs. Musial passed away May 3 at her Ladue home at the age of 91.

In memoriam…longtime attorney JOHN PRUELLAGE, chairman of Lewis, Rice & Fingersh passed away on May 5. Mr. Pruellage spent his entire 42-year legal career at Lewis Rice and led the firm for the past 22 years. He also served on the boards of many charitable and civic institutions, including Saint Louis University, St. Anthony’s Medical Center and the United Way.

Noted local historians ESLEY HAMILTON and NINI HARRIS have teamed up to author St. Louis Parks, a pictorial tribute to our town’s beloved common spaces. From the establishment of Lafayette Park in 1836 to Tower Grove Park and Forest Park, the book traces the history of and highlights the attractions found in parks throughout St. Louis city and county. The authors are scheduled to appear at a book-signing and discussion at St. Louis County Library headquarters on May 30 beginning at 7 p.m.
