Maryville Talks Books, the signature author series from MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY, kicks off this month with actress/ singer VANESSA WILLIAMS and her mother, HELEN WILLIAMS. The pair will appear on May 10 at Christ Church Cathedral for a discussion and signing of their book, You Have No Idea. The rest of the lineup includes former Democratic presidential candidate BILL BRADLEY (May 11), sportswriter FRANK DEFORD (May 30), author and historian DOUGLAS BRINKLEY (June 4) and Friday Night Lights and Three Nights in August author BUZZ BISSINGER (June 11). Except for the Williams event, all other appearances take place at Maryville University Auditorium and are free and open to the public. Ticket packages for the Williams event are $30, and include seating for two, as well as a copy of the book (brownpapertickets.com).

The World Affairs Council of St. Louis has bestowed its annual International Humanitarian of the Year Award to the DONALD DANFORTH PLANT SCIENCE CENTER led by board of trustees chair DR. WILLIAM DANFORTH and president DR. JAMES CARRINGTON. The award is in recognition of the Center’s mission to improve the human condition through crop research focused on feeding the hungry, improving health and preserving the environment. A June 7 ceremony at The Chase Park Plaza is planned.

A Chesterfield man who has contributed more than 1,050 volunteer hours to helping seniors in his community will be honored next week during a ceremony in Jefferson City. JIM MIGET, a resident of Garden View Care Center, volunteers with the Alzheimer’s Association of Missouri. He has helped staff the Association’s Helpline to answer questions about dementia and provide support to individuals and families dealing with Alzheimer’s. Miget is a resident of Garden View Care Center.

St. Louis native and Bravo television executive ANDY COHEN will return to town next week for a discussion and book-signing of his memoir, Most Talkative: Stories from the Front Lines of Pop Culture. Cohen’s appearance on May 11 at the St. Louis County Library headquarters begins at 7 p.m.

Doing good while you shop and get pampered… DILLARD’s and DIOR have teamed up for The Heart-felt Beauty Event to benefit the CHILDREN’S HEART FOUNDATION. On May 18, 19 and 20, all area Dillard’s stores will offer women a personal pampering experience from Dior specialists with either a free 30-minute spa service followed by a flash makeover or a free personalized spring makeover. A portion of proceeds from all Dior merchandise sold during the three-day event will support research into congenital heart defects, the most common birth defect in the U.S. and around the world.

There’s still time to join SAINT LOUIS CRISIS NURSERY’s Fifth Annual Fun Run and Wellness Walk at John Burroughs School this Sunday, May 6. JAKE SIMPHER, a Burroughs senior, created the 5K run and 1.5-mile walk as an annual fundraiser for the Nursery. Same-day registration begins at 9 a.m. with the event taking place at 10 a.m.
