Congratulations to Villa Duchesne senior SARAH SUTHERLIN, who has been selected as one of Missouri’s top youth volunteers of 2013. The recognition from the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes Sarah for her involvement in personally raising more than $10,000 for the American Cancer Society to fight the disease that claimed both of her grandmothers. As one of two state honorees, Sarah will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where she will join other top volunteers from across the country to participate in recognition ceremonies.

To commemorate its 100th anniversary, THE SHELDON has commissioned a photography exhibit and book, The Sheldon: 100 Moments, featuring the works of accomplished local shutterbugs RAY MARKLIN, ODELL MITCHELL JR., KATHLEEN M. SANKER and JENNIFER SILVERBERG. The ‘100 Moments’ depicted in the presentation were culled from more than 420 events held at The Sheldon during the 2011-2012 season. An opening reception and book launch at The Sheldon Art Galleries will be held Friday, Feb. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m.
St. Louis City license collector MICHAEL McMILLAN recently received international recognition for his community service, and he was in some very good company: Other honorees of the annual Trumpet Awards include singer/songwriter CHAKA KHAN (Legend Award), basketball great ALONZO MOURNING and wife TRACY (Humanitarian Award), and music icon CHARLIE WILSON (Lifetime Achievement Award). The Trumpet Awards, founded by civil rights icon XERNONA CLAYTON, celebrates the accomplishments of black Americans who have significantly contributed to enhancing the quality of life for all. McMillan, who is co-founder and board chair of the St. Louis Community Empowerment Foundation, previously served as alderman for the city’s 19th ward.
The inaugural LOUIE AWARDS, celebrating the very best in local professional theater, will be held on Monday, March 11, at the Gaslight Theater in the Central West End. The awards will recognize theatrical achievements in 2012, as recognized by the St. Louis Theater Circle, a new organization of local reviewers.
