Congratu lations to LN fashion editor KATIE YEADON and her husband TIM on their new baby girl! ELEANOR MARGARET was born June 19—three weeks early, but we’re told Mommy and baby are doing well at home.

In memoriam…Former Ladue mayor EDITH SPINK passed away June 21 at age 90. She served Ladue for 20 years until her retirement in 1995. In a tribute, LN reader MELISSA TURKEN wrote, “It was somewhat ironic that Ladue’s longest serving mayor died on the longest day of the year, and the first day of summer. When I think of Mrs. Spink, the first words that come to mind are warm and generous—truly an anchor for the City of Ladue.”

Looking for something worthwhile to do this summer? BJC HOSPICE in Brentwood is looking for 10- to 15-year-olds who can tie knots and cut material for a very special project. Young helpers are needed for upcoming ‘blanket-making’ parties. The blankets are later delivered by adult volunteers to patients in their homes. Soft cloth blankets, as well as handmade greeting cards, will be created at these upcoming parties: July 8, 11, 18 and 29 and Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the hospice office on 8300 Eager Road, Suite 500A. Email volunteer coordinator Marsha Shanker for more information, mjs2008@bjc.org.

There’s a new room at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center—and it’s not just any ordinary room. ‘Caroline’s Room’ is designed to provide families added privacy and comfort while coping with the uncertainties of a premature birth. The room is the creation of St. Louis native JOCELYN MAMINTA and her husband, GARY DOYENS. The couple established the first Caroline’s Room 15 years ago at Yale New Haven’s Children’s Hospital, in memory of their daughter, Caroline, who lost her battle after two months. Maminta, a Lafayette H.S. alum, is a reporter at WTNH in New Haven, Conn. She and her husband have established Caroline’s Rooms in five states.

CLAYTON HIGH SCHOOL has been ranked among America’s Best High Schools in the latest issue of Newsweek. Clayton comes in at No. 89, the highest-scoring high school in the state of Missouri, as determined by student/teacher ratio, graduation rate, number of college-bound students and SAT scores. Metro Academic and Classical in St. Louis is listed at No. 93; Ladue High School comes in at No. 103.

Olivette-based fiction writer JOHN DALTON is out with his second novel, The Inverted Forest, a story about unexpected violence and unlikely devotion in a summer camp set in the Missouri Ozarks. Dalton, whose debut novel, Heaven Lake, was listed as a Best Book of the Year by Publisher’s Weekly, The Chicago Tribune and St. Louis Post-Dispatch, will make a July 21 appearance at St. Louis County Library headquarters to read from his new book.
