A St. Louis teen has returned home with the World Medal for the U.S.A. from the World Championships of Irish Dancing in Belfast, Northern Ireland. MICHAEL HALL of Webster Groves represented the state of Missouri, as well as the U.S., earlier this month at the largest competition for Irish dance in the world. Michael, who placed 15th overall in the competition, is a student at Mayer-Torno School of Irish Dance.
The ST. LOUIS FINE PRINT, RARE BOOK AND PAPER ARTS FAIR is coming soon. Proceeds from the event (May 4, 5 and 6) benefit the St. Louis Mercantile Library at University of Missouri-St. Louis, the oldest library west of the Mississippi. Participating dealers include Kodner Gallery and Clark Graves Antiques. The fair opens May 4 at UMSL’s J.C. Penney Center with a preview night. With the Kentucky Derby fast approaching, many area organizations and businesses are busy planning Derby-related events to benefit charitable causes around town. On Thursday, May 3, BYRD STYLE LOUNGE in Clayton is hosting ‘Derby at the Byrdie’ to benefit EQUINE-ASSISTED THERAPY, an organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding services for individuals with disabilities. The event, from 6 to 11 p.m., will feature a spring/summer fashion show, a Best Hat Contest and complimentary drinks and light appetizers. A suggested donation of $10 is required.
On Friday, May 4, MID AMERICA HORSE RESCUE will hold a St. Louis Derby Party to benefit its efforts to care for rescued thoroughbreds. The former race horses are then trained for therapy programs to serve people in need. The gathering at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis takes place from 7:30 to 11 p.m and will include silent and live auctions, as well as a Derby Hat competition. Meanwhile, on Sunday, May 6, ST. ANDREW’S CHARITABLE FOUNDATION is hosting its Derby Brunch at the historic Hawken House in Webster Groves. Highlights include traditional Derby dishes and beverages, as well as hat contests, family-friendly activities and tours of the Hawken House.
