The grandeur of Portland Place will be front and center at the upcoming 2014 CENTRAL WEST END ASSOCIATION HOUSE & GARDEN TOUR. Six historic mansions along one of St. Louis’ most exclusive streets will be featured on the tour, the first time in 10 years that these homes have been available for public viewing. Designed in 1888 by noted St. Louis private place surveyor Julius Pitzman, Portland Place is one of the few remaining World’s-Fair era private streets.

The 44th annual tour takes place Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, June 1, from noon to 4 p.m. An Opening Night Preview Party kicks off the event on Friday, May 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. House Tour tickets ($22 in advance, $25 at the door) are available for purchase at all Pulaski Bank locations, Coffee Cartel and Left Bank Books, or by calling the Central West End Association at 367-2220 or visiting Call the Central West End Association for Preview Party tickets.

More St. Louis love: Stories of the visionaries, protesters and fearless-but-enthusiastic tradesmen involved in the building of the GATEWAY ARCH are chronicled in a new book. The Making of an Icon: The Dreamers, the Schemers, and the Hard Hats Who Built the Gateway Arch tells the story of architect Eero Saarinen, as well as the movers and shakers who had a hand in the monument’s conception and construction. The book is the latest from local author and journalist JIM MERKEL.
