Score! Kudos to tennis virtuoso DICK JOHNSON of Saint Louis Country Club, who captured the gold medal at the 2009 SUPER SENIOR WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS earlier this month in Perth, Australia. Johnson’s Britannia Cup Team faced off against Australia in the final, and it came down to the doubles match, which was won in two sets by Johnson and teammates Jimmy Parker of New Mexico, Ken Robinson of California, and Fred Drilling of Maryland.

You’ll be seeing a lot more of 8-year-old DOMINIC COPE LAND: The Valley Park Elementary second-grader has been chosen as a poster boy of sorts for the NATIONAL CHILDREN’S CANCER SOCIETY. Dominic can currently be seen on the organization’s Web site and will soon grace NCCS promotional materials and brochures. Diagnosed with leukemia at 2 ½ years old, Dominic went through three years of chemotherapy and has been cancer-free for five years!

Our salute goes out to newly appointed MARINE CORPS CAPT. CHRISTOPHER McCARTHY (CBC ’99), who in addition to his rank promotion was also awarded a Bronze Star for his recent service in Afghanistan. Christopher is the son of Edward and Margaret McCarthy of University City.

The MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN CLIMATRON turns 50 next year, and to celebrate, the Garden is out with a commemorative book honoring the world’s first geodesic greenhouse dome. Missouri Botanical Garden Climatron: A Celebration of 50 Years comes with more than a dozen 3-D images by famed photographer DAVID KLUTHO and rarely seen archival and contemporary full-color photographs of the 70-foot structure. A pair of 3-D glasses are included with the book, which will be available by Thanksgiving at the Garden Gate Shop and other area bookstores.

Attention, St. Louis gourmands…VOLPI FOODS is out with a new, pocket almanac-style book featuring rare Old World recipes and plenty of historical anecdotes about one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious makers of dry-cured meats. Authentic Volpi: An Almanac of Volpi Family Recipes and Traditions was written by journalist SARAH KELLOGG and chef MICHAEL LAUKERT with input from Volpi’s LORENZA PASETTI. Delizioso!

Bellerive Country Club’s longtime PGA head professional MIKE TUCKER has been appointed to the PGA of America’s board of directors. He and four other directors were sworn in at the association’s annual meeting in New Orleans this month, and will each serve three-year terms. Tucker was elected to the PGA in 1990. and has served at Bellerive as head pro since 1996.

In memoriam…St. Louis cultural icon RUSSELL KRAUS passed away Nov. 8 at the age of 91. Kraus, the son of German immigrants, studied art at Washington University and was appointed Carnegie Fellow for his work. In 1949, he and his wife commissioned FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT to design their Ebsworth Park home in Kirkwood. The home, which is open for touring, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Kraus also managed the Missouri WPA graphics project in St. Louis, designing and creating posters to support the war effort during World War II. A few of his works are now at the Smithsonian. We hear that a book on the life and work of Kraus, considered by peers a true renaissance man, is in the works. Readers who may have personal anecdotes about the artist are encouraged to submit them to info@russellkraus.com.

No, it wasn’t the Pink Ladies you saw the other day at Olivette Lanes…rather, 60 of SUSAN FRANK’s closest family and friends gathered to help usher in her sixth decade! An all-female contingent, ranging in age from 33 to 90, showed up in their finest ’50s and ’60s attire, played poker bowl, took turns at karaoke and schmoozed the afternoon away. In lieu of gifts, partygoers were encouraged to donate to the St. Louis Breast Cancer Coalition, where Frank serves on the board.
