Congratulations to WILLIAM and EVELYN METZGER, who are celebrating an amazing 65 years of marriage this year. They met when William was 11 and Evelyn was 13, and 10 years later they were married. Six children, 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren later, the Chesterfield couple is still very much in love.

Wash. U news…DR. CRAIG REISS has been named the Sam and Marilyn Fox Distinguished Professor in Medicine at WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE. Reiss directs the Cardiology Consultants and the Heart Care Institute at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. HELEN PIWNICA-WORMS, Ph.D., has been appointed the first Gerty T. Cori Professor, named in honor of the university faculty member who shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine with her husband in 1947.

Lights, camera, action! SLEEK, the newly opened steakhouse at LUMIERE PLACE, will be the backdrop for the second season of celebrity chef HUBERT KELLER’s acclaimed PBS TV show, Secrets of a Chef. The series shows Hubert transforming his famous dishes into easy-to-follow recipes for the home cook. Producers will film 26 episodes on location in the restaurant’s new kitchen.

Someone call Indiana Jones! This summer, staff of the SCOTT JOPLIN HOUSE will excavate areas of the backyard. Volunteers are needed to help dig, screen, wash and run educational programs for visitors. The staff hopes to discover artifacts of historical value for the museum.

Going green…3DEGREES, the developer and manager for AmerenUE’s PurePowerT voluntary green energy program has opened its doors on the first floor of Ventana Lofts downtown. The program, launched in October 2007, encourages the company’s Missouri customers to support the development of wind power and other forms of renewable energy through the purchase of certified renewable energy certificates (REC). RECs are exchanged for power from ‘clean energy’ sources. For more information, click on the Pure Power link on Ameren’s Web site.

As part of its ongoing 100th anniversary, BRITH SHOLOM KNESETH ISRAEL CONGREGATION will host a special evening with well-known biblical scholar DR. AVIVAH GOTTLIEB ZORNBERG May 22 at 7 p.m. Following her presentation, guests are invited to mingle with Dr. Zornberg at a reception. For more information, call 725-6230.

Kudos to FRIENDS OF SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY LIVER CENTER, which presented a $200,000 check for continued research at a gift commemoration ceremony held recently at SLU.

Eco-perks…THE RITZ-CARLTON ST. LOUIS recently announced it will henceforth offer free valet parking for any hybrid car! The offer extends to both hotel guests and visitors, and the cars will be given special green-colored parking passes to identify them as eco-friendly.

Congratulations to St. Louis native JAYNA ALTMAN, who has won the title of MISS MISSOURI INTERNATIONAL 2008. Affected by profound hearing loss since birth, Altman has devoted her life to raising awareness about children who have been affected by the same disability. She will represent Missouri when she competes for Miss International in Chicago this summer.

CIRCUS FLORA is getting its 15 minutes in the national spotlight this year when CBS SUNDAY MORNING airs a segment on Circus Flora later this summer. Host MARTHA TEICHNER visited recently to watch performers rehearse at Three Creek Farm, the homestead of Circus Flora founder DAVID BALDING and his wife LAURA. She’ll return again in June to shoot the complete show, and the story will air sometime later.
