St. Louis’ own EMILY PULITZER has been awarded one of the 2011 National Medals of Arts and Humanities by PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA. Pulitzer’s “contributions as a curator, art collector and philanthropist (who) has dedicated herself to connecting art and viewers through her generosity…” were cited as some of the reasons why she is deserving of the honor. Other National Medal of Arts recipients honored at the White House this week included actor AL PACINO and poet RITA DOVE.

A royal affair: Ladue News readers will get an added opportunity to celebrate the arrival of Diana, The People’s Princess exhibition, which comes to St. Louis Feb. 23 to 26 at America’s Center. A book signing and cocktail reception hosted by MARY STRAUSS will be held at Strauss’ Westmoreland Place home on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The event will feature exhibit curator and owner MAUREEN DUNKEL as the guest of honor, with each guest receiving an autographed copy of Dunkel’s book, My Decade with Princess Diana. Music superstar DIANA ROSS has been announced as this year’s headliner for Variety’s Dinner with the Stars. The April 28 gala will be held at the Peabody Opera House, with all proceeds from the event benefiting Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, which is celebrating 80 years of helping kids with disabilities. Next weekend’s Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) gala will honor the legacy of former director PAUL HA, whose leadership oversaw the construction and opening of CAM’s new facility in Grand Center. Ha also is credited for positioning the museum as a national and international leader in the field of contemporary art. Ha resigned late last year to become the new director of Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) List Center for the Visual Arts. Proceeds from the Feb. 4 gala benefit CAM’s exhibition and education programs.

New York archbishop (and St. Louis native) TIMOTHY DOLAN is headed to Rome next month, where he and 21 others will officially become cardinals. POPE BENEDICT XVI last week elevated the 62-year-old Dolan, who will be among the youngest in the college of cardinals at the Vatican. Dolan was ordained as a priest in St. Louis more than 35 years ago, and served in three local parishes before becoming vice rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and then serving as auxiliary bishop in St. Louis in 2001.

St. Louis-based Psycho Films has released its fourth feature film, Welcome to Shirley, which made its world premiere in St. Louis at The Tivoli this week. The film is under the direction of 2010 Ladue H.S. grad JOE WEIL, currently a film student at the University of Southern California. Weil shares the credits with other Ladue alums, including executive producer BLAKE LAWRENCE (class of ’06), producer SAM KOENIG (class of ’11), editor JAKE TORCHIN (class of ’10), makeup artist CARLY JACOBS (class of ’10), costumer ALLISON BECKER (class of ’09), propman ROBERT TUNG (class of ’09) and audio technician RYAN HAYNES (class of ’09). Welcome to Shirley, described as a “comedic drama and dramatic comedy,” follows two estranged brothers reunited following the death of their father.

Comedian DANA CARVEY (Wayne’s World, Saturday Night Live) has been confirmed as the opener for the 24th annual Bob Costas benefit for Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, to be held Saturday, April 21, at the Fox Theatre. The event’s headliner, as well as ticket information, will be announced shortly. Stay tuned!

His vision and leadership in the establishment of a clinic for the underserved have garnered BOB FOX the 2011 St. Louis Award. Each year, the award recognizes a St. Louisan who has contributed “the most outstanding service to the community.” Fox, owner of NewSpace Office Interiors, is the founder of Casa de Salud, a midtown health clinic for the city’s underinsured and uninsured Hispanic population.

Ladue News is collecting children’s toys and books, as well as non-perishable food items, from now until Tuesday, Dec. 20. All will be donated to CATHOLIC CHARITIES, and will be distributed to needy families in the area. Items may be dropped off at LN during normal business hours, 8811 Ladue Road, Ste.
