The Chase Park Plaza is part of St. Louis’ historical DNA. “No matter where I go, almost everyone I run into has a significant memory related to this legendary hotel—they saw Sinatra or Bob Hope there, or had their prom there, or got married there, or their grandparents were married there,” says Marcia Smith Niedringhaus, general counsel and executive vice president of development for CWE Hospitality Services. The same effortless elegance, sophistication and exemplary service that made the Chase Park Plaza one of the world’s grand hotels now makes The Private Residences at the Chase Park Plaza an ideal place to live, she adds. “We don’t have to fake style and historical charm. It comes naturally. And we’re right across the street from Forest Park—how’s that for green space?”

    Construction is now complete on the custom-designed condominiums in the 30-story Park Plaza building, originally built, like the Chase building, in the 1920s. Both landmark structures, which share the same street address, are on the National Register of Historic Places. “We left the outside of the Park Plaza building intact, preserving the amazing Art Deco architecture,” Niedringhaus explains. Inside, all but the first two floors were razed. Floors three through five are hotel rooms, and floors six through eight are extended-stay executive suites. “Everything from the ninth floor up now holds 86 luxury condos, ranging from 1,200 to just under 7,000 square feet,” she says. “Thirty-five units, priced from $492,000 to $4.5 million for the penthouse, are still available.”

    Just as the hotel once attracted discriminating travelers from all over the world, the Private Residences are designed for sophisticated homeowners, Niedringhaus notes. Amenities include all-new plumbing and electrical systems, hardwood floors in the kitchen, living and dining rooms, and top-of-the-line appliances, finishes and fixtures. Many units have fireplaces, crown moldings, coffered ceilings and private terraces ranging from 500 to 1,000 square feet. Each home has spectacular park or skyline views.

    Residents also enjoy access to the Garden Terrace, with its outdoor fireplace, tiered fountain, two large gas grills, seating areas, dog-walking area and community garden, and the Savoy Room, a gathering area with a gas fireplace, large-screen TV, conference table and attached catering kitchen and serving area. Included with each Private Residences home are two Santé Fitness and Wellness memberships, two indoor parking spaces and ample storage space.

    “And residents have all hotel amenities at their fingertips, including the beautiful lobbies, five-screen movie theater, hair salon and spa, heated swimming pool, business center, concierge and valet services, five outstanding restaurants, as well as room service and catering,” Niedringhaus says. The Central West End location is another plus. “It’s one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the city—residents are just steps away from fine dining, unique shops, and world-class attractions like The Muny and the Saint Louis Art Museum,” she says. “You can order a picnic basket from our culinary team and enjoy Twilight Tuesday outdoor concerts on the front lawn of the Missouri History Museum.”

    It’s hard to believe that during the 1980s, the once mighty hotel had fallen into disrepair. “The Chase was actually closed down for almost 10 years,” Niedringhaus says. “But today both structures are thriving, and the Park Plaza has a renewed sense of grandeur—proving that it’s possible to celebrate the elegance of the past while enjoying the convenience and ease of contemporary city living.”
