The Professional Theatre Awards Council presented the 4th annual Kevin Kline Awards at The Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts at Webster University. Executive director Steve Isom presented the emcee, Broadway star Lee Roy Reams, who delighted the crowd with his song and dance routines.
Productions from 13 companies received awards from the 40 professional groups who participated, all of whom make a major impact on the economy, provide performance opportunities for talented and creative actors, and provide superb entertainment.
Local actress Colleen Backer was a double winner for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a play and another in a Musical. Rob Ruggiero also was a double winner for Outstanding Director of a Play, “The Little Dog Laughed,” and another for the Musical, “Ella.”
Musical Lead Actor and Actress winners were Lewis Stadlen and Tina Fabrique, and for Plays, David Whalen and Erika Rolfsrud. Musical Supporting Actor winner was Christopher Hickey, and Supporting Actor for a Play was John Pierson.
First-time participant, The Black Repertory Company, won three awards for “Sarafina!”, including best musical production, and the new Insight Theatre Company won two awards for “Grace and Glorie.”
Young Abigail Isom brought the audience to their feet for a rousing finale of “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow,” from “Annie,” the role in which she’ll star in the Muni’s summer production.
