Any movie with a romantic component—this one is a romantic thriller—lives or dies by the chemistry between the two stars. This film’s leading actors have it in spades. The other component is the plot: What is the obstacle keeping our young lovers apart? That gets a little trickier, because in this case, it would appear to be God. So I guess now would be a good time to talk about a little thing called ‘willing suspension of disbelief’—you’re just going to have to go with it.

David Norris (Matt Damon) is a promising politician with his eye on New York’s U.S. Senate seat. After his first, unsuccessful run at it, he encounters a young woman, Elise (Emily Blunt), in a hotel men’s room, and the attraction is instantaneous. Their spontaneous kiss is so connected and intense it prompts David to utter a shocked expletive. Then as quickly as she appeared, she is gone. That is that…or, rather, that was supposed to be that. Due to some fumbling by the hands of Fate—a group of otherworldly men known as the ‘adjustment bureau’—David runs into Elise on a city bus. Now it is on.

David is snatched by these spiritual welfare case workers, who say that he may not see Elise again, and any attempt at an end-around will ruin both their lives. David, of course, refuses. The rest of the movie has David and Elise trying to get together while the universe works to keep them apart. It doesn’t seem like a fair fight, but our young lovers do remarkably well, considering. Yes, there are gaping holes in the story. Yes, there is circular logic. But the chemistry is palpable. You will want to cuff the hands of Fate to get these two together.
