There are plenty of things you already know about Albert Pujols, he’s a future Hall-of-Fame first baseman, a family man and dedicated philanthropist. But here’s something you might not know: The Cardinals slugger is also a major car buff, and when he’s not working out at the ballpark, you can often find him doing carpool duty in the family’s 2007 Rolls-Royce. “My kids love that car,” says Pujols. “There are two TVs in the back so they can watch their favorite DVDs.” The Rolls was a gift in 2006 from Albert’s wife Deidre, who knows the way to her husband’s heart.
This year, Deidre was at it again, surprising Albert with a Lamborghini Murciélago LT 40. “That car is all about performance, and on a nice day, nothing beats a drive with the top down.” (Sorry kids, this one’s a two-seater.) The sports car can reach 220 miles per hour, so needless to say, you won’t see Pujols reaching that kind of speed on the St. Louis highways. “People always joke that I should take the car out and ‘see what it can do,’” he says. “But it doesn’t seem like such a good idea to my family, or my team!”
Pujols says cars are his weakness. “I’m not into having a ton of jewelry or anything like that, but I love cars. I love how they ride; I love that no matter who you are or what you do for a living, you get noticed in a great car. I think it’s a guy thing,” he says. The family also owns a Bentley Coupe (Deidre’s ride) and two Cadillac Escalades. And if you picture Pujols sending the cars out to be cleaned or serviced, think again. “I go to great lengths to care for them and keep them clean. I take care of them like they’re babies!”
