Teresa Borbonus has a long history with Des Peres, having moved there with her family when she was just 2 years old. Later in life, after living in University City, Teresa and her husband, John, an associate circuit court judge for St. Louis County, returned to Des Peres, moving into her childhood home. The couple lived there with their children, Bella 11; Evie, 9; and Gia, 7, before moving to a new home in a different part of Des Peres last year. Teresa took a few minutes recently to discuss her family’s love for the neighborhood.

What is the best-kept secret in Des Peres?

The amount of outdoor things to do here. Des Peres has a number of great parks, including some small ones that people might not know about. They’re a great gathering place for school events, families and friends. We love Des Peres Park—you can do everything from taking walks and playing soccer to fishing or having a picnic.

What do you like best about living here?

Everything is right here at your fingertips, from shops and restaurants to grocery stores like the new Schnucks and Dierbergs. We also have The Lodge, which is an amazing community center. It’s such a friendly community. While our old house and new house are in different parts of Des Peres, the welcoming nature is everywhere. It’s not just a smile when you’re walking down the street and pass a neighbor, but stopping to ask, How’s your mother doing? How is school going for the kids?

What’s an ideal way to spend an afternoon in Des Peres?

We would probably ride our bikes through the neighborhoods, walk to friends’ houses, or go up to The Lodge. On the way home, we might stop at The Daily Bread, which is such a neat restaurant with a great mix of people always there. And of course, a stop at Sweet Be’s—it’s a great little candy shop and toy store, and my kids love it.

Neighborhood Notes

Des Peres is a treasure in mid-county, with its tree-lined streets, friendly neighborhoods and superb quality of life. You will find streets filled with joggers and cyclists, folks heading to concerts in Des Peres Park on a Friday evening or just taking a stroll around the lake! The Lodge recreation center offers many activities for young and old, while the Kirkwood school district, West County shopping mall, and locally owned cafes and shops offer everyone all the conveniences.
