Originally from the Springfield, Ill., area, Alex and Meghan Haycraft moved to St. Louis in 2011 looking for a home that would give them a taste of the outdoors, while still offering a convenient location. They found it in their craftsman home in Manchester, where they frequently welcome Alex’s 4-year-old son, Myles. Alex, a web developer at Soft Surroundings who plays in the band Park, and Meghan, a scientific IT customer advocate at Monsanto, also are raising two dogs, Dexter and Felix. We asked Meghan about the neighborhood highlights.

Why did you move to Manchester?

I grew up on 7 acres of land, so I was pretty used to having privacy and space. Our home backs the woods so you can’t see anyone behind us—it’s peaceful with tall, mature trees. We see a lot of wildlife: We have a deer family that will hang out in the cul de sac, and Myles loves it when we see owls! The neighborhood also has a pool, tennis courts, a playground and a huge field, so those were nice amenities.

Do you have any favorite hangout spots in the neighborhood?

That’s another part of the reason we moved here—we’re 25 minutes or less from everything, and we live about 3 minutes from the Corner Pub & Grill, which we love to visit for games, and they have this really amazing Drunken Potato Soup. We also like Wild Agave, a Mexican restaurant. On nice days, we walk the dogs at Castlewood State Park or walk them up to Fritz’s Frozen Custard and sit outside.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES

Cheryl Nelson, Laura McCarthy Real Estate

Manchester has that hometown feel; it’s like living in a small town, but you’re in a metropolitan area. They host homey events like Manchester Days with homecoming and parades; and Paul A. Schroeder Park has wonderful family meeting areas, trails and summertime events. Manchester is most known for its historical downtown on Manchester Road and its central location.
