The Birchfields enjoy experiencing small-town life in a big city. A short stroll down Lindbergh Boulevard to Clayton Road, and all of their favorite shops and restaurants are right at their fingertips. Kathy Birchfield, a homemaker and former real estate agent, and her husband, Blake, an insurance broker, also chose Ladue for its top-notch schools. Their kids, Alice and Kathleen, are students at MICDS; while Davison and Millie attend Conway Elementary; and Jimmie goes to Ladue Early Childhood Center. Kathy told us more about why they love Ladue.

Where do you like to hang out?

We try to be big supporters of the small businesses along Clayton Road: Imagination Toys, Giddyup Jane, Vie, Ladue Florist and Mister Guy. We love the small-community feel—when you go into one of the shops or the Schnucks, everyone recognizes you and says hi to you.

What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret?

Our neighborhood Schnucks always has a great wine selection and good buys.

Ladue is our premiere suburb. Home to four country clubs, three private schools, a fabulous public school district and St. Louis’ finest neighborhoods, it is a large city with a wide range of housing, shopping and amenities, making it very inviting and inclusive.
