The Missouri Women’s Golf Association held its 16th Senior Championship Tournament recently at Terre Du Lac Country Club in Bonne Terre. The Senior Championship Banquet was highlighted by the presentation of the Bernice Edlund Award to Cissy LeGear of Kirkwood.
Since 1952, this award is presented annually during one of the state championships to the MWGA member who has promoted the aims of the Association and set an ideal standard of conduct by her devotion to golf, demeanor on the golf course, strict observance of the rules and etiquette of the game, and a high degree of sportsmanship.
LeGear has been a recurrent club champion at Algonquin. Her husband is Dan LeGear, a USGA Rules official. Since 1991 she has worked for USGA qualifiers, the Saint Louis Metropolitan Golf Association, The Saint Louis Women’s District Golf Association, Algonquin Country Club and the Missouri Women’s Golf Association. She is now the chairwoman for the USGA Public Links Championship Committee. In spite of that workload, she still finds time to run qualifiers, help with the MWGA Junior Girls Championship and spoil her three granddaughters.
Missouri Women’s Senior Championship:
Defending champion Barbara Berkmeyer of St. Louis held onto her Missouri Women’s Golf Association title, winning for the ninth consecutive year. Berkmeyer shot a 153 on rounds of 75-78 to win by five strokes. Harriette Myers of New Madrid was second with a 158.
The 2008 Senior Championship for Missouri’s best women amateurs had a two division format that offered a variety of competition. The Championship Division played a course approximately 5,433 yards in length, which tested the players after weeks of rain on the Skyview Course. The Open Division played a course of 5,121 yards and offered a chance for all players to compete.
Berkmeyer’s golf resume is lengthy and impressive. She was the Missouri Amateur Champion (‘65, ’70, ’74-75, ’84), Senior Women’s Champion (2000-2007) and a USGA Senior Women’s Amateur runner-up in 2002. Last October, she finished third in the Women’s Western Senior Championship in Naples, Fla. Berkmeyer also received the Hindman-Von Rump Award for her first round low gross score.
Local ad agency Jordan Group helped raise more than $40,000 through the second annual St. Louis Sportscasters Golf Tournament at Fox Run in Eureka. “We are so thankful to all the sponsors and participants in this year’s golf tournament,” said president Cary Jordan. “We thank them all, and we particularly thank the Children’s Miracle Network and the staff at Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children’s Hospital who are truly the heroes here.”
The tournament drew 64 golfers, including sportscasters Joe Buck, Ozzie Smith, Al Hrabosky, Rick Horton, Bernie Ferderko, John Kelly, Rich Gould, Jay Randolph, Martin Kilcoyne, Randy Karraker, Mike Claiborne and Brian McKenna. For the second year, the FOX Sports Midwest team, led by Al Hrabosky, took first place.
Fresh off a season when he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was in a three-way playoff for the final cut spot at the NCAA Tournament, Illinois’ Scott Langley, a Manchester native, returned to the course for his first competitive tournament since the NCAA.
Langley, a Parkway South grad, played in the Western Junior Championship at the picturesque Seaside Course in St. Simons Island, Ga. Langley placed fifth in the 155-player field. He used back-to-back rounds of 66 and 68 on the 7,005-yard par 70 course in rounds two and three to make a charge. He finished at three-under par 277 in a tie for fifth. “I hit the ball as well as I have in a long time,” Langley said. “I really wanted to win, but I couldn’t get my putting stroke going.”
Junior Girls Golf:
Parkway West grad Catherine Dolan won the 48th Missouri Women’s Junior Girls Championship recently at A.L. Gustin Golf Course in Columbia. Dolan, who won the Class 2 state championship last fall for the Longhorns, captured the junior championship with rounds of 72 and 75 for a 147. She will attend Missouri State this fall. Hanule Seo finished second with a 153. Seo will be a senior this fall at MICDS.
This year’s Missouri Four State Team will consist of Dolan, Kristen Hamel of Chesterfield and Kate Gallagher of Savannah. Hamel finished third with a 156, Samantha Keller of Ballwin tied for sixth with a 159, and Jacque Bardgett of Chesterfield was the winner of the A flight with a 159.
Everyone knows by now that Tiger Woods will miss the remainder of the 2008 season and that includes the BMW Championship, Sept. 1 through 7 at Bellerive. As the third of four PGA Tour playoff events in 2008, the BMW championship field will be open to only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings.
“First, let me say on behalf of Bellerive Country Club, the Western Golf Association and the BMW Championship, our thoughts are with Tiger and his family, and we wish him all the best,” said Jerry Ritter, general chair of the BMW Championship. Ritter added that while Woods won’t be in St. Louis, the world’s other top 70 players, including No. 2 ranked Phil Mickelson, should be. “Nothing changes this fact: St. Louis will be at the epicenter of the golf world in September, and we will ensure fans a memorable, electric championship golf experience throughout the week at Bellerive.”
It’s not the first time St. Louis-area fans have been disappointed over a scheduled appearance by Woods. The World Golf Championship’s American Express Championship at Bellerive was officially canceled in September 2001, days after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.
