Just the views from the rooftop of the Moonrise Hotel would be enough to win anyone over, but the boutique property offers much more for an out-of-the-ordinary stay.

Walking into the lobby of the eight-story hotel, we immediately felt the eclectic and stylish influence of the surrounding Delmar Loop neighborhood. Contemporary furniture and artwork fill the space, but the standout element has to be the continuously changing lights of the open staircase to the second floor. The courteous staff set us up in the Vincent Price suite with a modern sitting room overlooking Delmar Boulevard, four-person breakfast table and spacious double-sink bathroom. One of 10 suites themed around stars of the St. Louis Walk of Fame, our room paid homage to the ‘King of Horror,’ with photos of the actor lining the walls.

Heading up to the Rooftop Terrace Bar, we enjoyed watching the sun set under clear skies while sipping Aperol Spritzes and eating Pepper Fried Calamari. The rooftop, open daily from April through October, has a full bar and appetizers. Lights stretch from the large, eye-catching moon slowly spinning above the crowds who gathered at tables and couches to enjoy the spring evening.

At Eclipse Restaurant downstairs, we were warmly greeted by our quirky server, Chris, who graciously guided us through the innovative signature cocktails and contemporary American dishes on the menu. With colorful paintings, funky lights, glass cases filled with vintage lunar toys, and a mix of retro and modern furniture, Eclipse’s décor adds to the chic and distinctive ambiance.

After an impressive dinner that included decadent wild mushroom soup, pan-seared sea scallops and grilled filet, we were ready for a good night’s sleep amidst the plush linens of our king bed. With the rooftop bar open to 2 a.m., the hotel wisely shuts the doors separating each floor from the elevator bank, with kind reminders about its guests sleeping soundly in their rooms. Just one of many details that add to the charming and unique accommodations at the Moonrise, which has garnered numerous local and national awards since opening in 2009.
