While approaches to reducing wrinkles on the hands and décolleté are limited, facial wrinkles can be erased by using a wide range of surgical and nonsurgical techniques. The choice of procedure depends on the nature of the wrinkle.

“On the face, there are ‘dynamic’ wrinkles (those that form from repeated movement) and ‘static’ wrinkles (due to sagging skin and loss of elasticity),” says Dr. Richard Moore, medical director of The Lifestyle Center. He says each type of wrinkle requires a different solution. Dynamic wrinkles respond well to Botox or similar products, while static wrinkles are best treated with laser resurfacing or dermal fillers, Moore says.

Facelifts still result in a more youthful appearance for many patients, says Dr. Charles Nathan of Parkcrest Plastic Surgery. However, it is common to pair a facelift with additional nonsurgical procedures, such as laser treatments, to refine the skin and remove fine lines. “Face-lifts don’t eliminate all lines and wrinkles because you can’t pull the skin taut everywhere,” he says. “Fine lines around the eyes and lips usually do well with lasers, fillers and peels.”

Skin-tightening and -lifting treatments may help avoid facial wrinkling in some areas by eliminating sagging skin that creates creases and folds. Dr. Kenneth Rotskoff of the Ultherapy Center of St. Louis uses a technique that delivers focused ultrasound to multiple layers of skin. “Ultherapy creates thousands of minute thermal injuries to the skin’s deeper layers, and the body responds by healing the injuries with new collagen formation,” he says. The collagen formation helps lift and rejuvenate the skin, preventing the sagging that cause some lines and wrinkles.

Regardless of the approach you choose, physicians agree that a healthy lifestyle, sun protection and consistent skin care will help any face appear healthy and glowing.
