Total ankle replacement is a burgeoning technology with long-term results that compare favorably to knee and hip replacements for longevity of the prosthesis, Schmidt notes. Before we had this technology, our only option for patients with post-traumatic ankle arthritis was ankle fusion, which contributes to arthritis in surrounding joints because of the restriction on mobility. He says the new technology allows replacement of the ankle with a prosthesis that maintains motion and gets rid of pain without the late complications of fusion.
Patients return to function more quickly than with fusion and can do everything they did before the surgery. As with other joint replacements, surgeons discourage repetitive high-impact activities. Ankle replacement has proven itself to be an excellent option for properly selected patients.
Extensive Experience in Ankle Replacement…
Dr. Gary Schmidt, founding partner of the Olive Surgical Group, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery. His passion is helping people regain mobility with post-traumatic ankle reconstruction and total ankle replacement. Schmidt works out of Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital and has done more total ankle replacements than any physician in the city. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in foot and ankle, and personally takes each patient through every step of the assessment, surgery and post-surgical care.
