The American Heart Association has partnered with Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University Heart & Vascular Center on My Heart. My Life., a national initiative to inspire healthy eating, as well as physical activity, to sequentially lower the risk of heart disease and strokes. And to support the program advocating healthy living, a free cookbook, Cook Your Way to a Healthy Heart, is available at barnesjewish.org/myheartmylife.

“When we cook at home, we tend to eat healthier,” the American Heart Association indicates in the cookbook, which equips home cooks to choose heart-healthy foods through recipes, recommendations and tips.

Noteworthy tips include consuming whole grains, lean meats, and colorful fruits and vegetables like spinach, carrots, tomatoes and berries. Suggestions for a healthy, well-stocked pantry consist of balsamic vinegar, canola oil, long-grain brown rice, whole wheat pastas, lowsodium soy sauce, and spices such as garlic powder, cumin, ginger, chili powder and cinnamon.

Recipe categories include Snacks, Salads & Dressings, Vegetables & Sides, Poultry, Meats, Seafood and Desserts, with appetizing entries such as Grab-and-Go Snack Mix, Edamame & Penne Salad with Feta, Red Wine Beef Stew with Mushrooms, Chicken Pot Pie, Salmon with Cilantro Pesto and Pear & Cherry Crumble.

As noted in the introduction, “Heart-healthy meals are an important part of any diet, (and these recipes consist of) ingredients that enable the body to operate at its full potential without sacrificing flavor.”
